Come For The Xperience: AICC Explores The Power Of AI BY SUSAN RILEY Artificial intelligence is moving full steam ahead on its way to revo- lutionize the corrugated and folding carton industry and our entire world. Many companies are excited about the opportunities it offers to improve their business processes, especially by automating time-con- suming and repetitive tasks, but there is also fear of the unintended consequences it could inflict, both real and imaginary. To learn more about this pervasive technology, AICC, The Indepen- dent Packaging Association, has dedicated an entire conference to it so that its members have the information they need to inform their own AI journeys.
American Baler To Add New Wing At Bellevue, OH Facility Bellevue, Ohio based American Baler Com- pany, a leading manufacturer of balers since 1945, announced an ambitious expansion project at its Bellevue, Ohio facility. The project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2025. Coinciding with American Baler’s 80th anniversary, the expansion proj- ect will increase the manufacturing footprint by 20 percent through the addition of a stra- tegic wing to the existing facility. The expansion will not only increase the physical size of the facility but also improve American Baler’s ability to serve its employ- ees and customers with innovation, safety, quality, and efficiency improvements. It will increase available capacity for fabrication, production, and assembly with an eye on the reduction of equipment and parts lead times. The project will be carried out in three phases. The initial phase will include site and utility preparation, construction of the new ad- dition, and installation of overhead cranes. Subsequent phases will include the in- stallation of state-of-the-art steel process- ing equipment along with workflow en- hancements to optimize material movement CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
The AI Xperience, set for May 14-16 in Chicago, Illinois, will gather more than a dozen the industry’s top experts who will help lead the way through this technology in efforts to lift all boats in the packaging industry. “Kudos to AICC that they decided they’re not going to be left behind and that they’re going to be at the forefront of this,” said Mohamed Azzouz, Continuous Improvement Manager for Royal Containers, in a recent webinar moderated by Taryn Pyle, Director of Education and Professional Development at AICC. Creating A Digital Twin Azzouz will be giving a presentation on his company’s journey in creating a “digital twin” to improve their business processes. Due to CONTINUED ON PAGE 24 The AICC AI Xperience takes place on May 14-16 at the Hyatt Rosemont in Chicago, Illinois.

York Container Invests In New Technology At Its First Greenfield Box Plant In Elgin, IL BY DAN BRUNTON York, Pennsylvania based York Container Company, a subsidiary of the Atlantic Packaging Company, recently completed the startup of its first greenfield corrugated box plant in Elgin, Illinois. This state-of-the-art facil- ity encompasses over 400,000 square feet of manufacturing space and integrates cutting-edge technology. The Elgin plant consolidates various packaging solutions, including corrugated sheets, brown printed shippers, and high-graphic specialty packaging, all under one roof. This strategic location serves to bolster York Container’s capacity to meet the growing demand for packaging solutions across the Midwest region.
One of the highlights of this new facility is the installation of two ad- vanced high board line rotary die-cutters from Göpfert. These machines signify a significant investment in technology aimed at enhancing pro- duction efficiency and product quality. Göpfert is a third-generation family-owned leading manufacturer of corrugated machinery based in Wiesentheid, Germany who specialize in full-line corrugated board processing systems – from pre-feeder to palletizer. Truly a one hand solution, from stack to stack. The first HBL rotary die-cutter was delivered to Elgin at the end of 2022, fully equipped from pre-feeder to material handling, with seven printing units, a double die-cut unit and several quality control systems, including monitoring system. The second HBL rotary die-cutter has just been delivered in January 2024, and it has four printing units and is the perfect addition to York Container. Frank Adams, Senior Vice President of Corrugated US at York Con- tainer, emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering exceptional quality, service, and customer experience. “While our new Elgin facility provides our customers with the most advanced corrugated production available, we are just as focused on quality, service, and providing the best customer experience available,” he said. Chris Danczyk, General Manager of the Elgin facility, echoed this sen- timent, highlighting the competitive edge that the new facility and its ad- vanced machinery offer in attracting and retaining customers. He added, “We know our customers have a choice of corrugated sup- pliers, and this new Elgin facility with its most modern machinery really makes a strong case for current and prospective customers to consider York as their first choice.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

With sustainability as a core focus, York Container uti- lizes 100 percent recycled paper from Atlantic Packag- ing Products in Ontario, Canada, to offer environmentally friendly packaging solutions across various industries. This commitment to sustainability aligns with the broader ethos of Atlantic Packaging Company and reflects a growing in- dustry trend towards eco-conscious manufacturing prac- tices.
Nothing’s more rewarding than a couple made for each other.
Overall, the completion of the Elgin facility represents a significant milestone for York Container Company, po- sitioning it as a preferred partner for customers seeking innovative, sustainable, and high-quality packaging solu- tions in the Chicago market and beyond. AF&PA Releases Q1 2024 Containerboard Report The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) re- leased its Q1 2024 Containerboard Quarterly report. According to the report, total Containerboard produc- tion in Q1 increased 7 percent compared to Q1 2023. Operating rates for all major grades except Semichem- ical Medium increased compared to Q4 2023 while total production was down 0.7 percent (Q1 had 1 less day than Q4). Unbleached Kraft Liner production for export surged more than 41 percent over its year-ago levels. The Q1 2024 export total was higher than any quarter in 2023. Despite the significant increase in exports, domestic new supply was up 3.7 percent from Q1 2023 due to the in- crease in domestic production, as well as a 12.6 percent in- crease in imports of containerboard. New supply declined slightly from Q4. Mill inventories ended the quarter at 429,400 short tons, lower than at the end of 2023, but higher than any other month last year. No Lights. No Camera. All Action.
Make a stronger, lighter and more sustainable corrugated blank using less glue by implementing a “brick” style pattern developed by Baumer hhs. This pattern creates a stronger bond using less glue. Our new all-electric PX 1000 applicators with over a billion cycle life can easily apply the pattern with clean cutoff and accurate placement. The PGD 1000 sensor is there to show your customer that every box was properly glued so you’ll never end up on some gag reel. You can be the star with The CorrBox solution from Baumer hhs.
PGD 1000 Monitoring Sensor • Measure the glue proximity to the edge of the tab and avoid squeeze-out so you deliver an accurately glued box every time. • The printing on the carton does not effect the hybrid sensor’s ability to read the bead. Black, white, plaid or polka dot, the sensor is not bothered, so neither are you. • No UV additives needed for detection saves you money, time and effort.
PX 1000 Cold Glue Applicator • Extremely fast and powerful closing force means no drips or tailing so your first box is a good box. • Strong armature activation easily handles viscosity fluctuations and will work with a large variety of adhesives. • Fast action coil means you can now stitch your beads at higher running speeds lowering adhesive consumption up to 70% and improving board output.

ly contribute to a more competitive, agile, and customer-focused business model. However, AI is not a panacea, selecting where and how to apply the technology has a significant influence on maximizing the rewards. AI For Reducing Unplanned Downtime Gokul Gopakumar, VP of Technology and Business Development at SUN Auto- mation Group will discuss one of the more immediate value propositions that AI can bring to the operational side of a box plant: helping improve efficiency. AI is not a cure all and it is not easy, but it can be very effective. This presentation will cover ac- tions that every box plant owner can take today; what are some key considerations for every software or machinery purchase going forward; and how to rely on both suppliers and your internal teams to inte- grate new technology. Doing so can reap what could be up to 30 percent more out- put compared to what your machines and team achieve today. Redefining AI In Manufacturing Challenge the conventional Large Lan- guage Model (LLM) approach in AI, advo- cating for a shift towards Specialized Lan- guage Models (SLMS) for manufacturing. This talk led by David Wiens, Founder & CEO, BPS AI Software, will explore the advantages of SLMs in handling specific tasks and data, using case studies to illus- trate their effectiveness in predictive main- tenance, internal communication, and pro- cess automation in manufacturing settings. In manufacturing, language models can help analyze data, optimize processes, im- prove quality control, predict maintenance
