Lucio Mesquita
Journalist & Media Executive
Lucio Mesquita is a journalist, media executive and now consultant with over 30 years of experience in the field. He studied mass communications in his native Brazil, where he also started his journalistic career before joining the BBC’s Brazilian Service in 1991. At the BBC, he worked as producer and presenter of programmes for the Brazilian Service before moving to the BBC World Service’s main newsroom, followed by a move to become a producer and then editor at Newshour, the BBC’s flagship international news and current affairs programme. He returned to the Brazilian Service as its director, tasked with its modernisation and transformation into a multimedia operation. He then became the BBC’s Head of the Americas region, including English for North America, Spanish and the then Caribbean Service. Following a restructuring, he added Europe to his brief, including language services such as Russian, Ukrainian and Turkish. In 2007, Lucio became the director of the BBC’s regional centre in Bristol responsible for all the regional and local content on radio, tv and digital for the West of England. He completed his BBC career as the director of BBC Monitoring, the BBC’s unit responsible for monitoring and analysing open media content from around the world. He left the BBC in 2016 to become the Managing Director of Guardian Limited in Trinidad & Tobago, where he instigated a transformation plan to improve the digital presence of the T&T Guardian newspaper, together with CNC3 TV and seven radio stations, leading to the creation of a multimedia, integrated newsroom bringing together reporters and editors of all platforms under one editorial structure. Lucio returned to the UK in 2018 to focus on media consultancy work at a global level, helping media and news organisations meet the challenges of the digital era, working on editorial and operational projects in the Americas, Africa, Europe and the Middle East, especially through Innovation Media, a specialist consultancy business. On a voluntary basis, he also works with organisations in the Bristol area involved with youth development, including mentoring for young people interested in media.
