How has your experience been since relocating to grow your music? I’ve always told myself the saying, “Every dog has its day.” I feel like I’m really getting that experience now. I love it here with the experience of being able to walk around and see people who exemplify excellence and look like me. It makes me see that I can do this. When I get off work at night and I’m driving through the city to get home, I just look at all the lights around me and think, “Man, I’m actually here.”
When did you begin pursuing music after your recovery? In 2019, not even a year after the surgery, I entered a contest hosted by B.E.T. called “The Next Rap Star.” I was sleeping in my mom’s basement at the time and had just gotten a job. I won the contest, and they flew me to California. I was supposed to be there for two days, but I ended up staying for seven months. I shot two music videos, recorded five songs, and got 60 free beats from major producers. I realized I had a gift and this was my calling.
How did your experience in California help prepare you for where you are now? When I was in California, I quickly learned success involves much more than having talent. You have to put the effort and work into it to understand what you’re doing. Contracts were the hardest part for me to learn, and I’m still learning the business side of music. Many record labels will try to take advantage of you, so you have to know what you’re doing.
What are your plans for the immediate future? I’m working to brand myself as more than an artist. I have nieces and nephews and friends who have kids, so I can see the effects that I have on them. I want to figure out ways to help them and the community. I also want to advocate for people struggling with domestic violence.
