Definitions of key terminology 1. Water consumption: Water consumption refers to the amount of water used by individuals, communities, or industries and is either not returned to its original source or returned in a different state. This contrasts with water withdrawal, where water is taken from a source but may be returned after use. 2. Water withdrawals: Water withdrawals refer to the total volume of water removed from its source for human use, regardless of whether it is consumed, returned to its source, or returned to a different source. This water can be used for various purposes, including agriculture, industrial processes, or domestic needs. 3. Water discharges: Water discharges refer to the release of used or treated water from activities like domestic usage, industrial processes, or agricultural runoff back into natural water bodies, such as rivers, lakes, or the ocean. The quality and treatment of these discharges are crucial to prevent pollution and protect aquatic ecosystems. 4. Water discharges in the oceans: Water discharges in the oceans refers to the release or flow of water, typically wastewater or runoff, from terrestrial or human-made sources into marine environments. Such discharges can originate from a variety of sources including industrial processes, wastewater treatment plants, stormwater runoff, and agriculture. 5. Marine resources: Marine resources encompass living organisms (like fish, crustaceans, and seaweed) and non-living substances (like minerals, oil, and gas) found in the ocean and coastal areas. These resources are vital for food, medicine, energy, and other human needs.
