Along with show-exclusives and a rare background artist’s desk, the must-see exhibition boasts artworks from the films and cartoons that broke new ground in Hollywood. From original hand-painted backgrounds created at Walt Disney Animation Studios to signed limited edition cels from the minds of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, it is a body of work that is just as suited to historical archives as it is to the homes of our collectors.
BEHIND THE SCENES OF DISNEY
At the sprawling Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California, was an army of animators, illustrators and composers.
Over 700 artists and musicians worked day and night to bring much-loved characters to screens around the world, using revolutionary techniques and equipment. This included the first-ever multiplane camera, which moved artworks at various speeds and distances to create the illusion of depth. It even had its own paint laboratory, where expert chemists created their own secret formulas. Less scientific methods included animators pulling faces in the mirror to capture tricky facial expressions! Once the artwork was complete, the sound effects were recorded and a symphony orchestra performed the musical score before the film debuted in Hollywood.
