On behalf of my family and crew, I want to thank you for taking an interest in our program. I’m very pleased to present the largest selection of Black Hereford bulls in the history of the breed. We think this is the deepest set of bulls we’ve ever developed, and believe they will add revenue to your operation. Cattle markets remain high, with black baldy steers and heifers topping the sale barns across the nation. The best way to produce those cattle is by using a bull with a JN Balder prefix. We truly feel that these bulls represent the very best the breed has to offer. Below are some numbers to support that. As always, thank you for your confidence in our program. We are

BLACK HEREFORDS

CARCASS EPDs: MARBLING EPD (MAR): Predict the average difference in USDA Quality Grade in an animal’s progeny when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in numerical marbling score where one point equals one USDA marbling score. BACKFAT EPD (FAT): Estimate the average differences that are expected in external fat thickness at the 12th and 13th rib between progeny of different animals. Expressed in inches at a given age endpoint. RIBEYE AREA EPD (REA): Predict the average difference in ribeye area in an animal’s progeny when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in square inches. SELECTION INDEXES Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where indexes come in. Through rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes. ALL PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature Angus cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Consequently, maternal traits such as milk, stayability, and maternal calving ease are not considered in this index. Using API and TI, if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not use TI. If a bull has an API of 130 his offspring will generate $50 more than a bull with an API of 80. TI measures the increased value of offspring on feed. The higher the number, the more dollars paid when the are sold on a yield and grade basis.

EPDS EXPLAINED: The EPDs in this catalog were provided by the American Black Hereford Association, and were current at the time of compilation. The ABHA now has their EPD calculations done by IGS, the largest beef genetic evaluation system in the world, combining performance records from 20 million animals and nearly 20 different cattle organizations including the ABHA. An EPD is the difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future progeny of an individual of average genetic merit. They are reported in units of measurement for each trait (e.g. lbs., cm, etc.) The data used in this analysis is based on up to 20 generations of J & N breeding and thousands of head of cattle measured over 45 years of performance testing for growth, maternal and carcass traits. PRODUCTION EPDs: CALVING EASE DIRECT (CE): Predict the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when bred to first-calf heifers. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease. BIRTH WEIGHT EPD (BW): BW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring when compared with another animal in the same genetic evaluation. Birth weight EPDs are primarily used as an indicator of calving ease, with the age and size of the females to be bred usually dictating how much birth weight can be tolerated. WEANING WEIGHT EPD (WW): EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences in weight that can be expected between the progeny of animals in the same genetic evaluation at 205 days of age. Weaning Weight EPDs do not account for differences in weaning weight that are due to milk. YEARLING WEIGHT EPD (YW): EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences that can be expected between the progeny of animals at one year of age. DOCILITY EPD (DOC): Docility EPDs predict the percentage of an animal’s offspring that are expected to score favorably (1 or 2) on a five point scale when compared to the offspring of another animal. They are expressed as a percentage with higher values being favorable. MATERNAL EPDs: MATERNAL CALVING EASE EPD (MCE): Predict the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to the daughters of another sire in the same evaluation. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births. MATERNAL MILK EPD (M): Milk EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by a bull’s daughters. They reflect the average differences in weaning weight that can be expected in grand progeny due to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Available feed resources will dictate the extent to which milking ability should be selected.

• We begin the 743J sire group with this top notch homozygous polled two year old. Lot 7’s dam is a product of our ET program – going back to the incredible 1234 cow. In the pen, you notice his moderate frame and wide stance. On paper, the numbers really catch your eye – from birth through yearling, and all the way to the high-quality cuts at the meat counter. In this sale, he has the third highest API and is tied for third highest TI. This bull takes his sire’s traits to the next level.

• Lot 8 had weaning and yearling weight ratios of 115 and 113 respectively, showing off his growth characteristics. His EPDs rank in the top 10% of the breed for API and Marbling, the top 15% for TI, and the top 20% for BW and YW. He is long bodied with a square hip, and a brockle face.

• This yearling bull really impressed us with a massive 115 weaning weight ratio, coming off one of the best young cows in our herd, J004, who also raised Lot 70. This bull is in the top 35% of the breed for 10 out of the 12 traits shown here, and the top 15% in 8 out of 12. He has a beautiful stride, excellent curve to his ribs, and a high tail set. He’s well on his way to being an absolute stud.

• This homozygous polled yearling is a super easy calver, ranking in the top 3% of the breed for CE, and the top 4% for BW, MCE, and API. He is also in the top 10% for Marbling, which means his calves will have a greater chance of grading Prime. Starting with a live calf and ending with added value are reasons why his All-Purpose Index is so high – these traits are extremely important to the profitability of your operation.

• The Dam of Lot 18 raised the J043M bull that topped last year’s sale at $14,500. She’s done it again here, weaning this bull at a ratio of 115. He ranks in the top 1% of the breed for Milk (second best in this sale), the top 3% for API, the top 10% for TI, and the top 15% for BW and YW. He’s in the top 25% for 8 of these 12 traits shown here. He is homozygous black and has been dehorned.

• This 835K son is a yearling that is homozygous black and homozygous polled. He is short marked with extra black, and sets up nicely on his feet. His EPDs show an excellent growth spread, and an All-Purpose Index that ranks in the top 10% of the breed.

• This is a bull we are excited about. His EPDs are about as good as you’ll find anywhere, ranking in the top 35% of the breed for 9 of these 12 traits, and the top 15% for 6 of them. From calving ease, to growth, to carcass, and super high milking daughters, this bull is a standout in many ways. • Starting off this group of 714H sons is Lot 28. His EPD profile is solid across the board, ranking in the top half of the breed for 9 traits. Additionally, he is homozygous polled, eliminating the work of dehorning at weaning.

• The Dam of lot 30 is the #1 calving ease female in the breed, with the lowest BW EPD. We chose to combine her calving ease performance with the impressive growth and carcass traits of 714H. The result is the best calving ease 714H son we’ve ever produced, with an API in the top 4% of the breed. In the pen, he displays that calving ease with his moderate frame, plus he is homozygous polled.

He carries on the strong 714H phenotype that we are so fond of, and turns the dial up on the maternal traits and the carcass quality. Add to that, the fact that he is homozygous black and homozygous polled, and you’ve got a winning combination.

• The performance of this bull is eye popping! He began with a modest 79 lbs birth weight, but then had the third highest weaning weight (117 ratio) and the highest yearling weight (119 ratio) of any bull in this sale. He also had the largest ribeye area of his contemporaries, with a ratio of 128! His EPD profile supports the performance. He is in the top 15% of the breed for CE, the top 10% for WW and Ribeye, and the top 4% for YW. Lay eyes on him, and you’re really impressed with the pure mass, and how deep he is from front to back. He is homozygous black and homozygous polled.

• Lot 43 had the third largest actual ribeye area in his contemporary group, good for a 112 ratio. He combines that ribeye size with fantastic calving ease, a unique combination that 859H sons are famous for. He is smooth bodied and homozygous polled.
