TEXARKANA MAGAZINE

For many years, women were not permitted to join the Elks, leading to the formation of the Texarkana Elks Auxiliary on February 7, 1991. The group played a vital role in fundraising and community efforts until its dissolution in September 2022. Change came in 2010 when Linnie Steinberg, Joyce Nottingham, and Janice Barton became the first female members of Lodge #399. In 2017, Ann Walker made history as the lodge’s first female Exalted Ruler, followed by Katelyn Hicks in 2024, who became the youngest to hold the title. With over a century of impact, Texarkana Elks Lodge #399 continues to uphold its legacy of giving back to the community.

Established in 1896 129 years

The Salvation Army of Texarkana has been serving the community since its founding in February 1896 at 615 Spruce Street. Over the past 129 years, it has grown to support over 7,000 men, women, and children annually through a variety of vital programs. The Salvation Army’s services extend beyond aiding the homeless and needy families. Religious services, led by Captains Clara and Juan Gomez offer a welcoming place of worship. Disaster response services help survivors recover and rebuild after natural and man-made disasters, while social service programs provide food, clothing, and financial assistance, including unique offerings like protein in food boxes and rental assistance for at-risk families. Youth services include programs for music, athletics, arts, camping, and family counseling through the church, Center of Hope, and Boys and Girls Club. Seasonal initiatives like Red Kettles and Angel Trees bring joy during the holidays with toys, meals, and financial support. The Center of Hope offers shelter for families to stay together, with family rooms and beds for men and women. The Family Store supports these programs by providing essential goods and funding, ensuring that every donation and purchase directly benefits Texarkana. As it has for over a century, The Salvation Army of Texarkana remains steadfast in its mission, “To preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.”
