T he Dunham School has proudly served the Baton Rouge community for more than 40 years. Founded in 1981 with a mission to educate minds and hearts for Christ through a college preparatory program grounded in biblical truth, Dunham is now recognized not only as a leader in Christian education, but also as one of the most innovative and technologically advanced schools in the country. The school prides itself on meeting the needs of the individual student while delivering a highquality academic program combined with competitive athletics and inspiring fine arts offerings. Thanks to a longtime partnership with Apple, Inc., students have access to the latest technology as well as opportunities to engage in design thinking, coding, and engineering through the school’s robust STEM curriculum. Extracurricular and enrichment activities help students find shared interests, express their school pride, and grow together in faith while a focus on students’ social and emotional needs creates a balanced and healthy student experience. Counseling, advisory, and wellness programs as well as numerous opportunities for fun, fellowship, and collaboration contribute to a vibrant environment where students form lasting relationships with teachers and peers. The Face of PUBLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION East Baton Rouge Parish Schools LaMont Cole

L aMont Cole, a lifelong educator, stepped into his role as superintendent of schools at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year with remarkable energy and purpose. In just a short time, he has visited over 70 schools in the EBR portfolio, embarking on a mission to infuse joy, inspiration, and a profound sense of curiosity into classrooms across the district. Guided by a transformative vision, Cole is redefining what education can be—envisioning schools as vibrant spaces where learning becomes an adventure, imagination thrives, and the entire community feels invested in the journey. With his leadership, he seeks to ignite a shared passion for discovery among students, educators, and families alike, creating a school system that inspires and unites. How do you like to get involved in our community? My passion for positive change extends well beyond the classroom. I’ve held leadership positions with several community organizations, including serving on the boards of HOPE Community Redevelopment and The Tyrus Thomas Foundation. I’ve also served as the President of the Baton Rouge NAACP and co-hosted the radio show NAACP Speaks for five years. In addition, I have served as a public official for many years. Before taking on the role of superintendent, I was leading East Baton Rouge Parish’s governing body as Mayor Pro Tempore representing District Seven. Initially appointed to the East Baton Rouge Parish Metropolitan Council in 2015 and later elected for a full term, I’ve spearheaded numerous city-wide initiatives. What is special about the Greater Baton Rouge area to you? The Greater Baton Rouge area is special to me because it embodies the essence of connectivity, loyalty, and an unparalleled sense of community. The people here have a deep-rooted commitment to one another, and their loyalty is something you can feel in every corner of the city. Baton Rouge’s rich culture is unmatched, from the proud traditions of Southern University and LSU to the vibrant celebrations of Mardi Gras, the incredible food scene, and the unique Southern hospitality that makes everyone feel like family. For me, FAMILY is at the heart of what makes this city extraordinary. Whether it’s my own family or the larger Baton Rouge family, this is a place where people truly care for and support one another. It’s a city that has embraced me and my family, providing a foundation for us to grow, thrive, and give back. Baton Rouge is more than just a place—it’s home, and it’s filled with the connections, culture, and people that make it unlike anywhere else. This is a community that rises together in times of need, celebrates together in moments of triumph. It’s where I’ve built my career, raised my family, and witnessed the transformative power of education. For me, Baton Rouge is not just a place—it’s a collective effort to create a brighter future for every individual who calls it home.

The Face of EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Gateway Preschool and Technology Center PHOTO CREDIT: BUTTERFLIES OF HOPE PHOTOGRAPHY

G ateway Preschool and Technology Center was founded in 2013 by Terrie Hollingsworth and her husband, Mark Hollingsworth. Terrie graduated from LSU with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and has taught in the Ascension Parish Public School System for several years. During her time there, she piloted a transitional K-1 class and Project Read, a multi-sensory approach to teaching at risk students how to read. Gateway Preschool is a Christian-based preschool with a vision to provide a safe environment that is stimulating, developmentally appropriate, and enhanced with technology. “We attribute our success to God and to our hard-working staff,” says Hollingsworth. “Our phenomenal teachers, staff, and administration work together as a team and are constantly striving to raise the bar by incorporating new ideas and experiences for our students to encounter.” Her inspiration behind opening a preschool started with technology. During her days of teaching, Terrie encountered

many students who did not have a desire to learn. Due to this, she was determined to find a way to help children establish a drive to succeed. After attending a training course on how to incorporate technology in the classroom, she realized that this may be the answer. “Young children are so captivated by technology that they do not even realize that they are learning while using it. The smart boards in our classrooms are used to enhance the learning process and to help engage our students,” says Hollingsworth. She believes that adding technology in the classroom was a step in the right direction to help motivate and engage students in the learning process. Gateway Preschool and Technology Center just completed construction of their Activity Center; a space dedicated to the after-school students. They opened in August 2013 with two buildings. Today, their campus contains 6 buildings with Smart technology in the classrooms, a Technology Lab, an indoor playground, a splash-pad, a large activity room and four different playgrounds. In the last year, they have added new opportunities for summer camps, including a new playground which contains a basketball court as well as the completion of the Activity Center.

G race Therapy Center opened in 2021 in order to provide families with a comprehensive and collaborative approach to therapy. Now, only two years later, the center has expanded to three locations covering the Baton Rouge, Prairieville, and Denham Springs areas. Despite the expansion, the mission has remained the same: change lives. Katie Jenkins, the Executive Director of Grace Therapy Center, shares, “Our mission is to change lives and that includes employees, parents, families, and the kids that we work with. From parent training, all the way through the therapy that we offer, we have that mission in mind.” Grace Therapy Center provides Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy and family education, and works with children on their social skills throughout the school year and in camps they provide throughout the summer.

“Some of these kids come to us not talking, so we work all the way through those basic skills and even prerequisites, all the way through getting them ready to go to kindergarten or first grade. We only offer ABA right now, but we allow speech, OTs, and PTs to come in and have a space to work with them as well,” says Jenkins. The staff at Grace Therapy agree that seeing the children thrive each day is a highlight of their work. Along with that, seeing the relief the parents experience through the services the center provides is also special for those involved. “The best part is to see the relief in the parents, and also, the kids make such progress that it feels magical sometimes. It never loses its luster. It’s definitely something that you never get over,” says Jenkins.

education to ensure safe and responsible drivers are behind the wheel and driving on the roads we share in our communities and beyond. We must communicate the importance of understanding the rules of the road, and we hope to depart a sense of high responsibility it takes to operate a vehicle safely. New drivers will gain valuable skills, such as developing safe driving attitudes, heightening hazard awareness and avoidance, and understanding basic traffic laws. During our first phase of instruction, students will receive a well-rounded education in theclassroom with a comprehensive curriculum based on our textbook, the official LA Class E Driving Manual, and AAA’s How to Drive program. Along with current video supplements and in-class activities, the curriculum is designed to prepare new drivers for driving laws, regulations, and practices, as well as teaching them skills on how to manage visibility, time, and space in traffic. The classroom equips students to become aware of and quickly react to situations and hazards that can arise while behind the wheel. The second instruction phase is the behind- the-wheel experience operating our dual-brake student vehicle with a certified instructor providing direction and support from the passenger’s seat. This step applies the in-class skills and methodology of driving mechanics and driving operations taught in the classroom session. After passing both phases of instruction, we can provide the OMV’s Road Skills Test from our facility. The state-approved route is driven in our student vehicle with a certified instructor giving directional maneuvers which prove the student’s ability to safely operate the vehicle and join others on the roadway. If you are ready to sign up your new driver for the next available class, please check out our website koaladrivingacademy.com, swing by our office at 4606 Jones Creek Suite #140, or call (225) 465- 7044 for more information.
