The Face of PUBLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION East Baton Rouge Parish Schools LaMont Cole
L aMont Cole, a lifelong educator, stepped into his role as superintendent of schools at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year with remarkable energy and purpose. In just a short time, he has visited over 70 schools in the EBR portfolio, embarking on a mission to infuse joy, inspiration, and a profound sense of curiosity into classrooms across the district. Guided by a transformative vision, Cole is redefining what education can be—envisioning schools as vibrant spaces where learning becomes an adventure, imagination thrives, and the entire community feels invested in the journey. With his leadership, he seeks to ignite a shared passion for discovery among students, educators, and families alike, creating a school system that inspires and unites. How do you like to get involved in our community? My passion for positive change extends well beyond the classroom. I’ve held leadership positions with several community organizations, including serving on the boards of HOPE Community Redevelopment and The Tyrus Thomas Foundation. I’ve also served as the President of the Baton Rouge NAACP and co-hosted the radio show NAACP Speaks for five years. In addition, I have served as a public official for many years. Before taking on the role of superintendent, I was leading East Baton Rouge Parish’s governing body as Mayor Pro Tempore representing District Seven. Initially appointed to the East Baton Rouge Parish Metropolitan Council in 2015 and later elected for a full term, I’ve spearheaded numerous city-wide initiatives. What is special about the Greater Baton Rouge area to you? The Greater Baton Rouge area is special to me because it embodies the essence of connectivity, loyalty, and an unparalleled sense of community. The people here have a deep-rooted commitment to one another, and their loyalty is something you can feel in every corner of the city. Baton Rouge’s rich culture is unmatched, from the proud traditions of Southern University and LSU to the vibrant celebrations of Mardi Gras, the incredible food scene, and the unique Southern hospitality that makes everyone feel like family. For me, FAMILY is at the heart of what makes this city extraordinary. Whether it’s my own family or the larger Baton Rouge family, this is a place where people truly care for and support one another. It’s a city that has embraced me and my family, providing a foundation for us to grow, thrive, and give back. Baton Rouge is more than just a place—it’s home, and it’s filled with the connections, culture, and people that make it unlike anywhere else. This is a community that rises together in times of need, celebrates together in moments of triumph. It’s where I’ve built my career, raised my family, and witnessed the transformative power of education. For me, Baton Rouge is not just a place—it’s a collective effort to create a brighter future for every individual who calls it home.
