The Power of Expert Guidance WHY PERSONAL INJURY LAWMEANS SO MUCH TO ME

After over 20 years in personal injury law, there are still few things more satisfying than getting my client the outcome they deserve. Every day, people come into our office in serious pain, more stressed than they’ve ever been in their lives, and skeptical that anybody will be able to help them. With our expert guidance, we’re able to not only steer them through the incredibly frustrating, confusing labyrinth that is the legal process, but also to restore their hope. To be able to hand someone a check and watch as relief floods over them, knowing that they’ll be able to put their injury behind them, focus on their recovery, and get back to their everyday lives ... it’s difficult to overstate the power of that moment. Some of the memories of the people you serve stick with you forever. I remember one client who’d tragically lost his family in a brutal accident with a drunk driver. On top of the unimaginable grief of that moment, he’d suffered a fractured femur, wrist, and ankle, and struggled constantly with the pain. Of course, we couldn’t mend the damage that had been done. Not even close. But what we could do was help him manage his affairs, reduce his $300,000-plus in medical bills down to $8,000, get those paid, and secure him substantial funds to “compensate” for the loss of his loved ones and the permanent damage that had been done to his body. In horrific situations like that, it’s not right that legal woes should be tied up with the grieving process. Hopefully, the work we did for him allowed him to begin to find his footing in what I’m sure was an impossible time.

What we do for our clients goes beyond filing court motions or wrangling insurance companies. Over decades in business, we’ve developed widespread networks of physicians and other experts that enable us to set our clients up with the precise help they need in any given situation. For example, in the midst of a legal battle, many doctors will hesitate to stick their necks out and provide treatment, uncertain of whether payment will be forthcoming, but our medical partners trust in our results enough to do exactly that when a client comes calling. This is important, because our clients are more than another name on a list; they’re real people, going through extremely difficult situations, and it’s our job to do absolutely everything we can to cut away the chaos and keep them afloat. In my line of work, you see people embroiled in the worst situations of their lives. What keeps me coming into the office every day is our ability to offer a helping hand in the midst of tragedy, to let them know there’s someone they can trust and depend on in their corner. It’s the reason all of us at the Utah Advocates do what we do.

BECOME A ‘DOG WHISPERER’ TRAIN AS A PACK FOR BETTER RESULTS

too. It may also be beneficial to practice obedience exercises and games that challenge your dog.

DISCIPLINE To put a stop to the behavior, you’ll first need to change any of your behavior that’s reinforcing it. Any attention your dog gets when he’s barking — even yelling, “Rover, stop!” — teaches him to keep going, because you’re rewarding him with attention. Wait until your dog has stopped barking to give him any sort of attention, including looking at them. “To be successful with this method, you must wait as long as it takes for him to stop barking,” advises the Humane Society. AFFECTION Of course, your dog needs love and attention to thrive — a lack of it could contribute to barking behavior. Reinforce silence by giving your dog a treat and an encouraging pat when she demonstrates good behavior, like not barking. “Our pups want to work for our attention,” Cesar Millan reminds us. “Allowing her to do that and to see your happiness is, to your dog, the biggest reward of all.” To make your training program successful, consistency is key. Enlist the help of the whole family to stick to the principles. Together, you can foster a calm, peaceful home where you and your dog happily coexist.

Your whole family adores your dog — but not the barking. This issue can lead to feelings of frustration, and the more frustrated you get, the more your dog barks. It’s their only way of communicating, and they’re telling you, “My needs are not being met.” As Cesar Millan, the original “dog whisperer,” explains, “A barking dog needs exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order.” EXERCISE Part of the barking issue may be due to pent-up energy. According to the humane society, “A tired dog is a good dog and one who is less likely to bark from boredom or frustration.” If you already take your pup on a morning walk, try adding in an evening walk. You could add it to your child’s chore list and help get out some of the kid’s pent-up energy,

OUR CLIENTS SAY IT BEST

“This was the first time I have ever used a lawyer for anything.

From the very first call, The Advocates made me feel at ease

with the legal system and confident that everything would be fine.

They really went the extra mile. I even brought my kids to the

office when I didn’t have a babysitter, and one of the assistants

took such good care of them that they didn’t want to leave.”

4 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOUR DEPOSITION

If you’re involved in a personal injury case, there will likely come a time when the opposing side’s attorney will ask to take your deposition. This is an official process that usually takes place in a law firm conference room. A court reporter will first swear you in, then record a transcript of everything that’s said throughout the process. It can be nerve-wracking to imagine an opposing attorney grilling you, attempting to punch holes in your case. But with the right coaching from an experienced attorney and a few simple tips, it’s actually pretty straightforward. 1. FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE KEY. One of the first things the opposing attorney will try to figure out is how trustworthy and likable you’ll appear to a judge or jury. You’ll want to dress your best and make your appearance as clean and approachable as possible. Be as polite and professional as possible throughout the process. 2. SLOW DOWN. In the midst of this high-stakes question-and- answer session, it’s easy to get nervous and start talking a mile a minute. In the worst cases, clients may begin to blurt out answers before the entire question has been asked. Listen carefully to every Here are a few things to know ahead of your deposition.

word that is said and take a few moments to answer. You’re not being timed, so thinking for a minute to formulate a response will only help you in the long run.

That said, keep your answers short. You don’t want to give up any extra information if you can avoid it. Yes or no will usually work.

3. IF YOU DON’T KNOW SOMETHING, SAY SO. Too many clients try to guess at the answer to questions. If you don’t know the answer to a question, it’s almost always best to admit that you don’t know or can’t remember. 4. BE HONEST. Don’t try to deceive your own attorney or the opposing attorney, because chances are they’ll figure it out eventually and it will hurt your case. Any inconsistencies in your story will definitely come back to haunt you later.

February has Valentine’s Day; September has Labor Day; December, of course, has Christmas; and August has, um, National Raspberry Cream Pie Day. August may not host any major holidays, but it doesn’t lack for some of the goofiest on the calendar. AUGUST’S SILLIEST HOLIDAYS Are These on Your Calendar?

AUGUST 6: NATIONAL WIGGLE YOUR TOES DAY

AUGUST 17: NATIONAL THRIFT SHOP DAY

While the origin of this holiday is uncertain, it’s held every year on August 6. To celebrate, people are encouraged to wear sandals, flip flops, or other toe-exposing footwear. You can also frolic barefoot in the grass or simply stretch those digits throughout the day. Just don’t expect to see any Hallmark cards devoted to National Wiggle Your Toes Day anytime soon.

Thrift shops are a staple of American commerce, so it makes sense that there is a day devoted to them. Take the day to hunt for lost treasures and screaming deals. Many thrift shops also benefit nonprofit organizations, giving you even more reason to frequent them.

AUGUST 27: NATIONAL ‘JUST BECAUSE’ DAY

AUGUST 13: LEFT-HANDERS DAY

This celebration is really scratching the bottom of the holiday barrel. Joseph J. Goodwin created National “Just Because” Day in the 1950s. It’s a day to do something “just because.” Be spontaneous and have a little fun. There’s no one way to celebrate, which is fitting, given that the existence of the holiday seems to defy logic altogether.

About 10 percent of the population is left-handed. Lefties may be stuck in a right-hand-dominant world, but on August 13, they rule the roost. Originally founded in England, Left-Handers Day has taken off in the U.S. Righties are encouraged to try out a left-handed approach for the day. Lefties, for their part, are free to be themselves.
