On these degrees, you will explore linguistic processes and uses of language in a variety of contexts and across time. You will engage with real-world challenges, including: the language used to persuade and mislead (particularly in social media); the effect of dialect and accent on identity; the challenge of learning or teaching new languages; and the impact of acquired and developmental language disorders.

Whether you choose to focus on English Language, Applied Linguistics, TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages), or a combination of these, you will delve into some of the biggest real-world challenges related to language. Depending on your chosen scheme, you can explore topics such as child language and literacy, language sounds and structure, language policy and planning, history of the English language, software tools for applied linguistics. There will also be an opportunity to do a research project in order to develop expertise in a specific area. You also have the opportunity to gain the prestigious CELTA qualification* as a teacher of English to speakers of other languages. *subject to academic progression and interview
