Sassda Consultancy Turns Stainless Steel Data into Industry Action

Sassda is strengthening its role as South Africa’s specialist source of stainless steel market intelligence through a dedicated consultancy arm designed to turn industry data into practical commercial and trade support. At the heart of the service is a simple need: better decisions require better information. Stainless steel businesses need credible insight into how much material is moving through the market, where it is being used, which grades are in demand and how local supply compares with imports. Sassda Market Intelligence Specialist Tebogo Nkwe says the consultancy is intended to become a central point of access for this intelligence. “Accurate information allows us to generate insights that can make a measurable difference to local industry. It puts Sassda in a stronger position to help businesses understand the market and to use the available trade and regulatory instruments effectively,” she reports. A key initiative is a confidential survey of stainless steel distributors, which will gather aggregated sales and material-throughput information monthly or quarterly. Individual company data will remain confidential, but the combined results can reveal important patterns across the market. These include the balance between imported and locally produced material, regional differences in demand, shifts in the stainless steel grades being sold, and the industries and applications driving consumption. Over time, the data could show, for example, how usage in Gauteng differs from KwaZulu-Natal and where new opportunities or areas of pressure are emerging. The consultancy will also give companies a sector- specific resource when dealing with trade matters. Drawing

on Sassda’s stainless steel expertise and its engagement with the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC), the service can assist with market i nformation and guidance relating to tariff applications, import rebates and tariff adjustments. From data to intervention Sassda’s current analysis of the local hollowware market demonstrates how this model can work in practice. The project combines import volumes and declared customs values with retail prices, product specifications, stainless steel grades and local manufacturing capability. This evidence can help establish whether imported pots, pans and other hollowware products are entering South Africa at commercially realistic values and whether they comply with local material requirements. It can also support engagement with ITAC and other authorities where there is credible evidence of dumping, misdeclaration or substandard products. The same intelligence has value beyond regulatory action. It can help manufacturers assess demand, identify gaps in local supply, understand regional markets and make more informed investment decisions. By combining stainless steel expertise with confidential industry data and practical trade guidance, Sassda’s consultancy aims to give the sector something it has long needed: a credible, specialist information hub that converts market knowledge into better decisions, targeted interventions and new opportunities for local growth.
