Pratt Opens $253M Box Factory In Cedar Hill, TX

Conyers, Georgia-based Pratt Industries, one of America’s leading 100 percent recycled paper and packaging companies, announced it has officially opened its new $253 million advanced manufacturing box factory in Cedar Hill, Texas. At capacity, the 1.1 million square foot plant – one of the largest and most modern of the company’s 71 factories spread across 25 states – will provide 375 full-time, high-pay- ing, green-collar manufacturing jobs bringing Pratt’s total workforce to 11,500. “We’re very honored to be in Cedar Hill and we’re committed to the great state of Tex- as – in fact this is our fifth box factory here,” said Anthony Pratt, Executive Chairman of Pratt Industries. Pratt said the Cedar Hill Corrugating and Innovation Center brings the company’s statewide workforce to more than 1,000, with a total investment of more than $550 million. The company’s total U.S. investment is now more than $10.25 billion. Pratt was joined at the opening by U.S. House Representatives Jasmine Crockett and Marc Veasey.

As your business matures and grows, you may start to think about how you plan on moving towards a significant end goal: selling your com- pany. Whether you are in products or services, every business has to decide on an exit strategy. Will you sell your business to a family mem- ber so the business can continue to grow? Will you bring in investment capital to expand? Will you sell to a competitor as part of a merger and acquisition? Or will you someday simply close the shutters and turn off the lights?

Many companies will only look at the revenue goals and inventory or client list. There is a misconception that only companies with inven- tory are worth purchasing. There is an even broader misconception that, if you are in the services industry and do not have a tangible asset, you do not have something worth buying. Regardless of whether your company sells boxes or ideas, you may already have business value - you just have not yet recognized it as having worth. Regardless of your current situation, here are ways to reframe your business value. Processes make your company efficient: A scientific process, with documentation that can be accurately followed, is a repeatable pro- cess. Processes that are repeatable, and allow a company to achieve consistent results, take the guesswork out of efficiency and growth. When you have a formula, you can take out chance and become more effective at repeating the formula for success. CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

Pratt Opens (CONT’D FROM PAGE 1)

“It’s an honor to open this factory with Reps. Crockett and Veasey and I commend them for their strong leader- ship in Washington and laser focus on bringing green jobs to Texas,” Pratt said.

The Cedar Hill site will produce retail specialty prod- ucts as well as corrugated boxes and in-store displays for some of America’s leading companies using the compa- ny’s signature 100 percent recycled containerboard. “Recycling is an important weapon against climate change because as things decay in landfill, they emit methane which is 84 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide,” said Pratt. “So recycling is an important weapon against climate change.” In addition to bringing new jobs to Cedar Hill, Pratt will also sponsor a training and development program in col- laboration with the city and school district. “This factory will allow the company to grow for years to come, supporting our customers, employees and the community,” said Pratt. Last year, Pratt pledged to invest $5 billion in American recycling and clean energy infrastructure over the next de- cade. In May, Pratt announced its strategic growth initiatives across its nationwide network, the top priority of which is staying at the forefront of the high graphics movement. Pratt Lewisburg, Ohio recently added an HP PageWide digital web press to its equipment lineup to increase speed to market and flexibility while complementing their flexo and offset graphic capabilities. Pratt Industries is America’s fifth largest corrugated packaging company and the world’s largest, privately-held 100 percent recycled paper and packaging company. Pratt was founded in the U.S. more than 35 years ago and operates manufacturing facilities in more than 25 states. The Georgia-based company operates an exten- sive Recycling company to supply six of the most mod- ern, cost-effective 100 percent recycled paper mills in the country, located in: Conyers, Georgia, Staten Island, New York, Valparaiso, Indiana, Shreveport, Louisiana, Wapa- koneta, Ohio and Henderson, Kentucky opening in fall of 2023. The BoxMaker Helps Customer Increase Efficiency With Eco-Friendly Packaging

DOMA Coffee is known for creating high-quality, ethical, small-batch coffee that tastes awesome. Living by the motto, “Use our business for good and not for evil,” the company has been investing in the communities it touches for over 20 years. Sustainability and reducing their impact on the planet have been core values of DOMA Coffee since the company was founded in 2000 in Post Falls, Idaho. According to CEO Chris Harrison, DOMA constantly evaluates their packaging and use of materials to reduce their footprint and use less.

From compostable coffee bags to curbside recyclable metal tin packag- ing, DOMA Coffee has put tremendous thought into their primary product packaging. With a desire to further improve their sustainability profile, they recently put their secondary packaging under the microscope and asked the question, “How can we make this better for the environment?” Wishing to reduce their use of corrugated materials and packing tape, DOMA Coffee reached out to The BoxMaker to help them craft a solution. DOMA Coffee ships product to cafes and grocery retailers located through- out the Western United States. Historically, they were loading product into traditional corrugated cartons, tape sealing them, and then putting those cartons into a master shipper for distribution. The BoxMaker’s Enterprise Sales team consulted with DOMA Coffee and leveraged its award-winning structural designers to develop a solu- tion that not only reduced the brand’s eco-footprint but also improved their business operations. By replacing the stock RSC box that DOMA was previously using with a custom auto-bottom tuck-top style carton, The BoxMaker eliminated the need to use packing tape to seal each carton and sped up box assembly. The result? A 50 percent reduction in order pack-out time and the eradica- tion of tape, saving on materials use and costs. For more than 40 years The BoxMaker has been a custom box manu- facturer and packaging distributor to businesses in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and beyond. The company continuously invests in its people, pro- cesses, and equipment to remain at the forefront of digital print production for corrugated boxes and retail displays. As an experienced leader in this space, we deliver creative custom packaging solutions that conventional print and finishing methods cannot readily produce. Visit boxmaker.com .

ChromaScape Announces Acquisition Of Kemira Colorants & Dye Business Cleveland, Ohio based ChromaScape LLC, a specialty colorants and additives supplier, announced the acquisi- tion of Kemira’s colorants and dye business in a deal that closed on May 4, 2023. Kemira’s product line includes basic and direct dyes, organic pigments and special colorants which are used in numerous paper and packaging applications such as tis- sue, cardboard, newspaper and high-end packaging solu- tions for jewelry, cosmetics, and food stuffs. This acquisi- tion includes Kemira’s manufacturing site at Bushy Park in Goose Greek, South Carolina. “With this acquisition ChromaScape becomes the largest independent producer of dyes and pigment dis- persions in the United States and Europe. Our singular focus on color allows us to deliver exceptional value to our customers. We welcome the US and European asso- ciates who will transfer in the acquisition and look forward to continued collaboration with Kemira’s pulp and paper team,” said Seth Tomasch, CEO of ChromaScape, LLC. Chris Banks, Vice President of Sales, said they are very excited about the acquisition of the Kemira dye busi- ness. “Customers tell us that they want a domestic supply source as insurance against future supply chain shocks,” he said. “The Bushy Park plant provides this assurance. Our commitment to providing the best-in-class service ex- perience remains unchanged, and this acquisition will help us continue to deliver on that promise.” Domtar Shares Approach, Outlook on ESG Issues At MX.0 Southeast Event Fort Mill, South Carolina based Domtar, a part of the Paper Excellence group of companies, announced its appear- ance at the 3rd MX.0 Southeast Event where it shared its approach and outlook on Environmental, Social and Gov- ernance (ESG) issues. Paige Goff, Domtar’s vice president of sustainability, spoke to business leaders at the June event which fo- cused on data-driven, resilient and sustainable manufac- turing. When people talk about costs as a barrier to being more sustainable, Goff counters that it’s more expensive to do nothing. “There is an initial investment, but it pays off in the long run,” she says. “Our customers expect us to do the right thing and be responsible stewards of the environment. Our reputational risk is their reputational risk.” Similarly, she says, an effective ESG approach is import- ant for recruiting and retaining talent. The E in ESG gets the most attention, with the emphasis on environmental responsibility and care for natural resources. It’s an area where Domtar has been a leader, particularly in forestry.

But the G also plays a crucial role in Domtar’s ESG ap- proach. Governance is how Domtar connects the dots from senior leadership to the frontlines of manufacturing, Goff says. Their ESG committee includes leaders from across the organization with a diverse collection of roles and responsibilities. To lead efforts on the company’s six sustainability prior- ities, Domtar created working groups with subject matter experts in each area. These groups focus on putting into practice the improvements that will advance Domtar in water, waste, emissions, fiber sourcing, safety, community engagement, and diversity and inclusion. “Though carbon is the ‘it’ word right now,” Goff says, “We have long been focused on the bigger picture. Our ESG committee is deliberate about our environmental stewardship in a broad range of areas, including water management, responsible fiber procurement, transporta- tion and more. “These really take our efforts beyond just carbon and emissions — though that’s important — to see how we can improve in a number of areas. “Our social responsibility is important to us. We have a legacy of being a good neighbor in our communities, long before ESG was its name. We continue to invest in the places where we operate so that our employees and our communities will thrive together.”

Reframing Value (CONT’D FROM PAGE 1)

you have employees, subcontractors or freelancers, that talent pool of team members can go through a rubric and be evaluated at the end of each project to make sure they are bringing value to your company and your clients. Companies today can also leverage talent across the globe, so that your team members can include some of the

There are things you most likely do for your company every day that you consider SOP and obvious. For most new entrepreneurs, some of these pieces of common knowledge are not always so common. No matter how small the process, take the time to set up a process docu- ment that catalogs what you do, how you measure it, and what your standard results are. When it comes to value, having a proprietary process that demonstrates easily re- peatability is gold for a potential buyer. Contacts make your company known: If you go beyond sales and revenue in your company, the next best source of income and business are your company contacts. By having a large pool of contacts (different from purchased lists), you have a community of individuals who know and respect you as well as your company. This list goes be- yond a B2B engagement. Each individual can provide in- troductions, be a champion for work, and give your organi- zation a foot in the door of a potential client. Many companies forget their community and the way in which those contacts within their business provide assis- tance, new project work, and reputation building every day for those companies. The contacts can bring in consistent sales through referrals. These contacts become champi- ons for your company’s growth, and growth equates to revenue. Increased revenue is a clear value-add. Talent makes your company resource-rich: Whether

best and brightest minds from anywhere they are locat- ed. You may need reminders that if you want to see value in that talent pool, you have to remove yourself from that pool. Your job, on top of running day-to-day operations, is to grow your company and bring in amazing talent to do the work. This is the hardest idea to implement, but the real value lies in the team you build to serve your clients.

Leadership makes your company progress: One of the ways a member of the executive team can increase the company’s value is by being a thought leader and ex- pert in their respective industry. A leadership role can be demonstrated in different ways, including providing expert advice, mentorship of up-and-coming individuals, teaching or lecturing at an industry event, and volunteering for a board position with an industry panel or association. For example, are there voluntary board positions in your industry associations or in universities in your area where you can help mentor and guide the next group of professionals entering the industry? This experience of working with rising talent will help you become a better leader and more in tune with emerging issues. Leaders can also prompt discussions around these issues, leading to the industry doing better in the long run. Take stock in the non-monetary value that you already have put into your company. Your organization is more than just your bottom line – it includes intangible assets that have made your company what it is today. All the ex- perience and relationships you bring to the equation are unique to you and your company, and more valuable than you may think.
