40 YEARS OF CARRYDUFF BUILDING SUPPLIES

FAMILY IS AT THE HEART OF OPERATIONS FOR INDEPENDENT BUILDERS’ MERCHANT CARRYDUFF BUILDING SUPPLIES, WHICH HAS REACHED A MILESTONE 40 YEARS OF TRADING IN 2024… Keeping it in the family

A proper family business, John and Shirley Gilliland are assisted in the running of Carryduff Building Supplies by two of their sons, Andrew and Richard. Andrew is responsible for supervising pricing, dispatch, delivery arrangements and in-store business, while Richard manages the yard, lorries and drivers. “Mum and dad are still very much involved,” said Andrew. “My dad probably puts in the longest days, and you will always see mum in the office every day at some stage. It’s a real family team effort.” Carryduff Building Supplies covers a 12.5- acre site, selling most products required for the construction, landscaping and DIY markets. Andrew said, “We are a bit different from your standard builders’ merchant. We have a ready-mix concrete facility and also manufacture our own concrete blocks and other concrete construction products, alongside stocking building

supplies, timber, DIY, hardware, power tools and workwear. “We promote the business as a one- stop shop where builders can obtain everything they need for a construction project. From the foundations and build to landscaping and gardening supplies, we try to have everything covered.” Supporting the Gilliland family is a team of nearly 40 staff, almost half of whom are drivers for the firm’s fleet of 23 lorries. The knowledgeable team in the store, yard and precast concrete facility display a wide range of skills, working together to deliver on the ‘Small enough to care, large enough to cope’ ethos. With a low turnover of staff, this family- run business can rely on a strong team of committed employees, many of which have notched up more than 10 years’ service. “I started in the business 14 years ago,” said Andrew. “I had just qualified as

a solicitor when the recession hit, so I started helping in the office as a temporary stop gap – and here I still am over a decade later.” Delivery drivers are on the roads daily to provide a 48-hour service to customers across the Belfast and North Down area, while a fleet of nine concrete mixer lorries is staffed by hard-working drivers committed to getting pours on site when needed. Technical staff are on hand to advise on specific concrete queries. “If people want to submit new build plans, we can work out what materials they’re going to require and advise on technical queries, what strength of concrete is necessary and what design of concrete they’re going to need,” said Andrew. “At the opposite end, if a homeowner wants to put a fence in their garden, we can work out what materials they’ll need to build that fence.”
