PROJECT PROFILE

CARDINAL NEWMAN LIBRARY, ST MARY’S UNIVERSITY COLLEGE BELFAST

REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF AN ORIGINAL STAIRCASE WAS AMONG CHALLENGING ASPECTS OF O’CONNOR SUTTON CRONIN & ASSOCIATES’ WORK AT THE CARDINAL NEWMAN LIBRARY… STRUCTURAL ENGINEER

Structural alterations and refurbishment works to upgrade the existing library facilities - as well as an overview of current building usage, design and outline structural requirements - were supplied by O’Connor Sutton Cronin & Associates (Belfast) Ltd (OCSC). Internal works comprised alterations to roof lights, first and second- floor light wells, a new staircase and the removal of an existing staircase. External works included additional support provision for an existing lean-to-flat roof, replacement of existing windows on east and west elevations, replacement of canopies at the west entrances and additional canopies in the courtyard. Removal of the internal staircase was among the challenging aspects of the project. David Fletcher, Director, said, “Removal of the internal staircase required careful interrogation with a risk assessment

completed to ensure all required safety measures were agreed and put in place before works began. “OCSC ensured that the required works information was coordinated with the client and contractor. A new staircase was constructed within the new light well to link the ground, first and second floors together. “OCSC monitored the removal of the original staircase and the construction of the new staircase closely to ensure all safety measures were in place, and work materials used complied with the technical details and specifications.” Consistent, positive engagement with main contractor, Tracey Brothers, from the design stage throughout construction,

environment. This is a great example of how existing buildings can be refurbished and enhanced rather than completely rebuilding them. This reduces the carbon footprint of the project,” said David. “The new lightwell and staircase create an open space while connecting the ground, first and second floors together as well as providing natural light to all three floors. The chandelier which hangs from the new light well gives a modern but classic vibe to the surroundings.” Based in East Belfast, OCSC Belfast, has been in operation as a civil and structural engineering consultancy since July 2004. The overall OCSC group have 300 staff approx. in civil and structural engineers, mechanical and Electrical engineers, environmental engineers, Revit technicians, and administrative staff, it works across

aided the installation for OCSC. “The Cardinal Newman Library

refurbishment works create a modern feel while ensuring practicality within the library

various sectors including education, commercial, residential and roads.
