MOKRA GORA Mokra Gora, the wet mountain, was declared the world’s best tourist village in 2021! It was selected from more than 170 competitors from 75 countries, because it nurtures culture, celebrates tradition, provides opportu- nities to develop sustainable tourism and preserves bio- diversity, it is located between the mountains of Tara and Zlatibor. It is also home to the Drvengrad ethno-village built by famous filmmaker Emir Kusturica. Erected on Mećavnik Hill, it has everything that a town requires, al- though everything is made of wood, as the name suggests. ŠARGAN EIGHT The Šargan Eight is a narrow-gauge heritage rail- way that has been traversed since 1925 by a steam train known as “ćira”. Be sure to book your ride on time, as tickets are often sold out. The original railway was recon- structed in 2002, covering a total distance of 15,440 me- tres and encompassing 22 tunnels. The ride will trans- port you back in time at speeds of up to 50 km/h as it weaves its way through pine forests and the large, pic- turesque boulders that rise alongside the track. FROM ZLAKUSA TO THE TARABIĆS Close to Užice is the village of Zlakusa, where a tra- dition of pottery making has been included on the UNE- SCO list of intangible cultural heritage. Just a kilometre from the village is Potpeće Cave, which has the highest cave entrance in the Balkans. If you head from there to- wards Mount Tara, you can visit the Kremna Prophecy Complex, where you can even buy a piece of the stone that is said to have rendered the Tarabićs clairvoyant.
Đetinja below the fortress also represents a special ar- ea of unique beauty. Serving simultaneously as a prom- enade and a health trail, it is actually an oasis of pleas- ure in the middle of the city. KADINJAČA “The 14 th kilometre fell, but Kadinjača never will.” This poet’s notion has for decades been cited and re- membered in the Užice area as confirmation of the his- torical significance of the Battle of Kadinjača, a legend- ary hill located 14 kilometres from Užice. It was there, in November 1941, at the height of World War II, that the Republic of Užice was defended as the only liberat- ed territory in a Europe that had been captured by fas- cism. Despite being few in number and poorly armed compared to the superior German occupiers, Tito’s parti- sans, fighters of the Workers’ Battalion, attempted from Kadinjača to halt the German advance and protect the retreating partisan forces as they left Užice bound for Zlatibor. Testifying to their efforts today is a fantastic, must-see memorial complex with a permanent exhibi- tion on Kadinjača. ZLATIBOR From cabins and shacks to apartments and residenc- es, from the whirlpools of the Rzav to Olympic swimming pools, from meadows to modern stadiums and halls. The charms of this mountain once completely captivated Ser- bian King Aleksandar Obrenović, who received his own spring at the heart of the area, known as the King’s Wa- ter. Zlatibor is today among Serbia’s most popular cen- tres of tourism. Representing a genuine air spa, with clean air that’s particularly beneficial to those suffering from respiratory diseases, it is also a place where you can try the world’s most delicious bread bun with cured ham. The mountain’s highest peak is Tornik, at 1,496 metres above sea level.
