Prag Prague
If you’ve read the works of some of the greatest Czech writers, you’ve already been to Prague, and the way this city is described in literature also changes the way you will experience it
THE ALCHEMIST FROM NUMBER 22 With a book under your arm, you will ex- perience Prague, with all of its past, as magical, much greater and more com- plex than the city they today call “The Golden City”. ‘The Good Soldier Šve- jk’, ‘The Unbearable Lightness of Be- ing’,‘Prague Tales’ will be your best guides through this city, but this time, we’re taking you to Kafka. Although he wrote his works in German, Franz Kafka was undoubtedly a son of Prague, spending his entire life in the city. He was born next to the Church of St. Nicholas, in Josefov, on the periphery of the Jewish Quarter. The house burnt down, leaving nothing but the front door. Kafka spent some time living in the famous Golden Lane, but in a stone house with the number 22, hidden with- in Hradčany, the Castle District, home to the world’s largest and most imposing castle, this alchemist of literature wrote his best works. The museum dedicated to him is on the Malá Strana, and his grave is at the New Jewish Cemetery, so those are impor- tant stops on the map of Prague.
