SAN GINES

SAN GINES

However, if you fancy a dinner that’s combined with a hint of Madrid nightlife, head to The Penthouse by Wow. Inspired by the story of a hotel owner who spent 50 years living in this penthouse apartment, the restaurant is de- signed to make you feel as though you’ve been invited to a house party in a flat from the 1960s – one with a bal- cony that provides incredible views of the Gran Vía. The former bathroom has been converted into a DJ space, because - according to good Spanish tradition - dinner never ends with food alone, but rather represents a rea- son for a good time in and of itself. And when it comes to the food, chef Javier Goya, of the renowned Triciclo Restaurante group, is responsible for what is essentially a modern take on traditional Spanish dishes. When hitting the town, Spanish revellers practice “la primera copa” [the first drink], which implies a post-din- ner drink at some sophisticated venue, before continu- ing a (more or less) night of debauchery. Raise a toast like Madrid’s trendsetters at Jack’s Library, the best-kept secret of the city’s nightlife scene in the truest sense. When you find it, you’ll have to ring the doorbell, then enter a code (received when making your reservation) for the hidden door that leads to the dimly lit, British li- brary style bar that dates back to the 16 th -century. Set aside your phone (taking photos is not allowed) and or- der one of the perfectly prepared cocktails named after artists and writers like Juan Rulfo and George Orwell. Before heading to bed (or to observe sunrise), you should also visit the famous San Gines to sweeten the night with “chocolat con churros”. This Madrid eatery dates back to 1894, which is why it comes as no sur- prise that it is included in all gastronomic recommen- dations. One curiosity is that San Gines doesn't have a prominent menu. That’s because, quite frankly, if you come here, you already know what you’re ordering. Yes, yes, churros and chocolate sauce...

EL PESCADOR

The truth is clear: this city oozes hedonism. Or, as Hemingway once noted, “nobody goes to bed in Madrid until they have killed the night” I n contrast to Barcelona, Madrid rises (relatively) early, as shown by the number of designer spots for breakfast and brunch. If we had to choose just one, that would be the eclectic and sustainably designed ambience of Osom Coffee Atelier. With its large selection of fine coffees, as well as vegetarian, vegan, keto and paleo specialities, it will prepare you to spend a day in the Spanish capital. If you want to eat like the locals, we recommend din- ing at restaurant Ten Con Ten. The interior is best de- scribed as elegant and cosmopolitan, while the chic gas- tronomic experience of the “fake” semolina risotto with truffles cannot (and should not!) be described with words. Lovers of fish and seafood specialities will recommend El Pescador as being undoubtedly the best choice for din- ner. This restaurant has been nurturing its passion for the sea since 1975, and it caused a revolution by offer- ing fresh fish without sauces, side dishes or even a slice of lemon, in a desire to accentuate taste and freshness.
