T he defend a nts did not deny the ch a rges , but a rgued their a ctions were justified by the seriousness of the environment a l imp a ct of d a iry production , a nd the suffering of a nim a ls within the industry . T he tri a l , which commenced a t W orcester C rown C ourt on 20 / 03 / 24 , follows A nim a l R ising ’ s “ S top the S upply ” Da iry Ca mp a ign in S eptember 2022 , in which M üller ’ s D roitwich site w a s block a ded by protestors [ 1 ]. T his w a s p a rt of a succession of n a tionwide a ctions t a ken by A nim a l R ising in S eptember a nd O ctober 2022 , which s a w d a iry trucks immobilised , milk short a ges on superm a rket shelves , milk pours a t dep a rtment stores a nd more [ 2 ]. D efend a nts were sentenced to 640 hours of community service a nd ordered to p a y £ 3 , 200 in costs . T wo defend a nts were sentenced to 180 hours of community service a nd ordered to p a y £ 500 , while a nother w a s sentenced to 140 hours of community service a nd £ 1 , 000 , a nd the l a st w a s sentenced to 140 hours of community service while being ordered to p a y £ 1 , 200 in costs .
Ca mp a igners took a ction in 2022 to highlight a nim a l a griculture ’ s contribution to the ongoing clim a te a nd ecologic a l crises , a dvoc a ting for a pl a nt - b a sed food system to cre a te a f a ir a nd sust a in a ble future .
