THE UK’S PM URGES INDUSTRY TO HELP

I n a recently revised guidance statement, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging people across the U.S. to cancel or postpone events with 50 or more attendees for the next eight weeks to try to contain the fast-moving coronavirus pandemic. The CDC said individuals and organizations should reschedule large events and gatherings of any size should be reconsidered unless organiz - ers can protect vulnerable people, ensure proper hand hygiene and social distancing. The guidance doesn’t apply to schools, universi - ties or businesses, but that could change at any time. U .S. health officials have confirmed that the first human trial testing for a potential vaccine to prevent COVID-19 has begun. These early-stage, or phase 1, trials will test the vaccine on 45 males and non-pregnant females between the ages of 18 and 55, according to trial details on NIH’s website. The National Institutes of Health, an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, has been fast-tracking work with bio - tech company Moderna to develop a vaccine using the genetic sequence of the new corona- virus. The trial is taking place at the Kaiser Perma- nente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle, Washington. P rime Minister, Boris Johnson speaking to engineers fromcarmakers and the construc- tion equipment firms regarding whether they can shift production lines to building NHS ventilators. It comes amid growing concern about a shortage of the life-saving equipment as coronavirus infec- tions increase.
