Welcome to Walton Cricket Club

Tucked away in the beautifully set village of Walton- on-Trent, the ground is one of the true hidden gems of Derbyshire cricket. Overlooking the River Trent and framed by the 14th-century St. Laurence’s Church, it’s no surprise that Walton Cricket Club was recently voted Most Improved Ground and now regularly hosts Derbyshire County Cricket League cup finals. Known as one of the best batting wickets around, it’s a ground where bowlers really have to earn their money. Home to the Walton Leopards, the club is on an incredible run both on and off the field. The First XI were promoted from Division 3 South in 2023 and are now competing strongly in Division 2 of the Derbyshire County League for a second consecutive year. The Second XI have enjoyed a phenomenal rise, earning three back-to-back promotions to climb into Division 6 South.

Beyond the senior teams, Walton also boasts a growing junior section with players across all age groups, and a brilliant women’s side that continues to go from strength to strength. The club sits in a village with deep roots, the name Walton itself is thought to come from Old English, meaning “settlement of the Britons.” The area is also closely tied to the brewing heritage of nearby Burton-upon-Trent and lies just a few miles from the historic site of the 1322 Battle of Burton Bridge. Above all, Walton CC is a club built on community. From weekend league matches and Friday night BBQs to a buzzing clubhouse bar, there’s always something going on and everyone is welcome.

The Story

Why we’re here . Why we play .

Freddie Shreeve – Director of Sales, Boomerang Digital

The idea for the Boomerang Charity Cricket Day started with a chat, one of those conversations with a few of the more experienced hands in the industry. They told me about how, back in the day, there used to be a proper charity cricket day. A time when people from all corners of the sector, bingo, AGCs, suppliers came together not for meetings or sales, but for laughs, competition, and raising money for good causes. I couldn’t help but think, why did we stop doing that? So in 2024, we brought it back. We hosted the first Boomerang Charity Cricket Day at Walton Cricket Club, a place that’s close to my heart. I play here regularly during the summer and, for me, it feels like a second home. So to bring this event here, and welcome the wider industry to a club that’s been a big part of my life, felt really special.

Last year, as part of the day, we also raised £500 to sponsor Walton’s T20 kit for the 2025 season, a small gesture that means we’re not just supporting national charities, but giving back to the local community club that supports us, too. That’s something I’m particularly proud of.

‘An awful lot of fun and thanks to all at Boomerang’ Mark Sowray, UK Gaming Solutions

‘A fantastic day and a great laugh!’ Dave Robson, BJ Bingo

A great day with great people, thank you for the invite and hospitality’ Stevie Shaves (COO) Buzz Bingo

As for the day itself, it was everything we hoped it would be. Around 60 people joined us. We raised £3,000 for Shelter UK and Cancer Research UK. The cricket went to the very last ball. And for those who stuck around, the night ended with that Olly Watkins goal, as England beat Holland in the Euro semi-final. Unforgettable.

But this event isn’t just about cricket. It’s about bringing people together across sectors and companies, and reminding ourselves that this industry is built on relationships, not just results. That’s why, this year, we’ve taken things up a level.

For 2025, we’ve teamed up with Jeremy Godden (representing BACTA) and Miles Baron (representing The Bingo Association) to create a proper three-team competition. Each team is also playing for a charity that’s close to home. For Boomerang, this year’s cause is The Stroke Association , chosen in support of our colleague Steve Cook, whose wife suffered a sudden aneurysm last year while he was working away. It was an incredibly tough time, and we knew we wanted to do something meaningful in response. BACTA is raising money for the BACTA Charitable Trust , which supports Rays of Sunshine, a charity that helps grant wishes for seriously ill children. The Bingo Association will be supporting Variety, the Children’s Charity , which provides specialist equipment and life-changing support to disadvantaged and disabled children across the UK. Whether you’re playing, watching, sponsoring or just having a good time, thank you for being here. Let’s raise some money. Let’s play a good game. And let’s keep doing something good together.

Last Year

The inaugural Boomerang Charity Cricket Day , held on Wednesday 10th July 2024, was more than just a game of cricket, it was a celebration of industry friendship, fundraising, and football drama all rolled into one. From the first delivery to the final run, and long after the stumps were pulled up, the day delivered magic moments on and off the field. With over 60 people in attendance, the event raised £3,000 for Shelter UK and Cancer Research UK, a brilliant total for year one and a sign of even bigger things to come.

first innings

agc sets the tone

The AGC team got off to a flying start with explosive hitting from Freddie Shreeve, who smashed 55 off just 24 balls including six fours and four sixes, before retiring not out. He was partnered early by Jamie Harris, who also retired with a well-constructed 50 of his own. Despite the aggressive start, Bingo fought back hard through the middle overs. Jeremy Godden took two key wickets to derail the momentum, including the dismissals of Rohit Sherya and George Holland, while David Bradley, Mark Sowray, Howard Gant and Miles Baron each chipped in with vital wickets. AGC’s batting stuttered after the top order, with ducks from Ashley Molloy, Neil Winfield, Ian Shreeve and Brian Hirst. But a composed 36 from Chris Widdowson kept the scoreboard ticking.

second innings a classic chase Bingo responded with a patient and well-managed chase. Dave Robson (BJ Bingo) led the way, retiring on a fluent 50 off 42 balls* that included eight fours and a six, setting the tone for the innings. Mark Sowray chipped in with a composed 40, while David Bradley added a valuable 35. There was late drama when wickets started to tumble. Steve Shaves, Miles Baron, and Ben Harris all fell in quick succession, leaving Bingo needing runs in the final over.

But the moment belonged to Jordan Godden , who kept his cool under pressure. He smashed a six in the final over and then calmly ran the winning single off the last delivery to seal a famous victory with 25 off just 13 balls. second innings result Bingo Total: 208/6 in 35 overs

A signed England cricket shirt Multiple bottles of wine and champagne Teas and breakfast were masterfully handled by Laura Shreeve “We’ve set the standard,” said Freddie Shreeve, “but 2025 will raise the bar. More teams, more runs, more impact and even more laughs.” The industry’s Ashes is here to stay. Don’t miss it.

As if the cricket wasn’t enough, those who stayed behind after the game were treated to a moment of footballing magic as England beat the Netherlands in the Euro 2024 semi-final. Olly Watkins’ last-minute winner sent the clubhouse into raptures, an unforgettable shared moment that capped off a day already packed with sporting brilliance. “That goal from Watkins… what a way to finish the day. We’ll remember that night for a long time,” said one guest. bonus highlight

The Boomerang Charity Cricket Day wouldn’t be possible without the incredible team effort that goes on behind the scenes. From development and finance to project coordination, every corner of Boomerang plays a role in making this day a success. A huge amount of time and energy goes into planning the event, and we’re all incredibly proud to give something back in this way. the support

We’re also lucky to have some brilliant partners who support us year after year, a big thank you to Danny Grimshaw and Kelsey Chard at DG Creative Media, Ben Gallacher at Legacy AV and of course Walton Cricket Club for being such a fantastic host. A big thank you to Harry and Chappy, the unsung heroes of Walton Cricket Club. They’ve worked their magic once again to get the ground looking spot on for today’s match, just like they did last year. Week in, week out, they give up their time to prepare one of the best wickets around, and without them, none of this would happen.

A special shout-out to Laura Shreeve, who somehow manages to juggle breakfast, Cricket Teas and still smile through it all. And to the many others who chip in, there are far too many to name individually, but please know we are massively grateful. This day wouldn’t be what it is without you.

Not to mention our amazing sponsors, who play such a vital role. Their generous support raises a big chunk of the money that goes directly to our chosen charities, so from all of us, thank you so much. Thanks from all the team at Boomerang.
