BUILDING CONTRACTORS
C apital Propfund are developing a new distribution centre at Eastport Logistics Park in Gauteng to consolidate Pick n Pay’s Longmeadow distribution centre and three smaller facilities. This 164 470 m 2 structure will be one of the largest distribution centres on the continent, and it is currently the largest single phase warehousing development in South Africa. The distribution centre will house groceries in an ambient environment of approximately 94 000 m 2 and cold storage facilities of approximately 46 000 m 2 . The balance of the facility includes both incoming and outgoing gatehouses, truck wash, truck maintenance and refuel facilities, an energy centre, management offices and staff facilities and an RRU. External concrete hardstands for truck movements total approximately 147 000 m 2 . On completion the Distribution Centre will achieve Edge certification. The facility is being built on a site underlain by dolomite requiring a jointless post tensioned floor construction that will measure over 146 000m 2 on completion. The roof structure is considered to have the longest continuous roof sheet in the world with an official world record set at 280 metres for a single rolled sheet. This ground-breaking technology enabled Macsteel to apply their Novotexi sheet by lifting the roll forming mill to the level of the roof and seamlessly rolling the sheet directly onto the roof. All internal and external concrete columns and external concrete walls are of a precast tilt – up design that involves the casting of the wall elements in stacks and then lifting them into position. The precast columns were also cast on the ground on casting beds and then lifted into position. Column heights ranged from 8m to 26m high and weighed up to 43 tons each. Meticulous planning was required to minimise craneage costs. This provided a cost effective, low maintenance, fire resistant solution that PICK N PAY INLAND 2 DC
