A s one of the top medical and health sciences faculties in South Africa, Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences has a responsibility to lead the endeavour to ensure healthy lives and wellbeing for all. The Faculty’s new Biomedical Research Institute (BMRI) forms a fully integrated, future-focused and superbly organised research complex that matches and, in several ways, exceeds the best the world has to offer. The BMRI is based at the University’s Tygerberg campus, within the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, and is dedicated to understanding the genetic and biomolecular basis of disease and will be decidedly Africa in focus. The new facility allows for the immediate expansion of current research activities, as well as the strengthening of research and teaching capacity in fields such as bioinformatics, genomics, anatomy, surgery and neurology. With the planning of this project, first meetings were held in 2013 and the concept approval was only reached by 2017. Council approval and the tender process was completed in 2018, where after the project was able to commence with WBHO breaking ground in January 2019 for completion in November 2022. The project started off with a contract value of R670m but has increased since and is now at a value of R714m. The BMRI consists of a new building (13 938 m 2 ) consisting of four floors above basement level as well as a refurbishment of the existing FISAN building (17 367 m 2 ) that has six floors above basement level and is linked together by the Atrium. included within the project is a Dean’s Garden, east parking area, Central HVAC plant upgrade, new parking at the main entrance and sport’s field, new tennis courts and a bus embayment. 

BRIDGEWATER ONE – CENTURY CITY, CAPE TOWN

Bridgewater Precinct’s Century City Square, and has set the benchmark for other high profile developments to follow within the former Ratanga Junction vicinity. 

B ridgewater One is a mixed-use development situated between the once iconic Ratanga Junction Theme Park and the Century City Hotel and Conference Centre. The developer and professional team refer to the development as mixed use at it incorporates both commercial and residential buildings within its confines, which also includes beautiful and relaxing recreational and natural components. The development consists of an 88 room hotel, a 122 apartment complex which is set against the banks of a new waterbody, which was once Ratanga Junction. Finally, three commercial office blocks complete the precinct, which as a unit have been designed in unison with the hotel and apartment complex to form a beautiful courtyard with extensive landscape features for use by the general public.
