Construction World December 2022

NELSON MANDELA UNIVERSITY – E BLOCK EXTENSION T he client brief played a critical role during the conceptualization, design and construction stages. Attention to detail and execution was imperious during

the project as this would serve as new identity for Nelson Mandela Ocean Science department, which will furnish a series of dedicated academic spaces within a specialised research environment. With a build of this specific and specialised nature, timeous planning was imperative as challenges prevailed due to the enormous programme constraints caused by COVID pandemic lockdowns and secondly the prevailing factor of water shortage across the region which demanded caution and alternative water sources to ensure continuity of construction and future operations of the completed build itself. The building was conceptualised as a large internal veranda space, articulated as a triple-volume, multi- layered foyer space which links the main circulation spine with the more private spaces within. The internal planning contains a number of dedicated research spaces, specialised laboratories, offices, meeting areas as well as an eight-metre-deep diving tank used for training purposes, which forms an integral part of the western façade articulation. The specialised labs had to meet specific standards with required a fine combed HVAC system installation, and instrument spaces to handle flora and fauna samples which serve evidence of ocean life. As this is not a typical student campus, intensive integration of security and access systems have been incorporated to facilitate continuous monitoring of areas through the use of CCTV systems and access control measures within the facility. A three- dimensional sun-screen layer further articulates the main building façade while defining a unique aesthetic internally through the ever-changing shadow patterns throughout the day Motivating facts about the project: • The overall concept/ architectural intricacies of the build were even the minor details resulted in distinct disparate elements which all fused to

showcase a masterpiece in a larger composition. • Facility boasts of sophisticated internal finishes, which exceeded expectations • The mind boggling quality of the building achieved amid prevailing water scarcity in the region which could have easily had a negative effect during the construction processes, secondly the results of COVID each proved to be a nightmare for the construction industry. • This sophisticated build flags as a state-of-the- art space for research which will create quality working conditions for the end- users. • Prevailing challenges during the construction process also served as form of motivation for the contractor and in-depth construction knowledge was acquired which would be beneficial in the long term and on any other facility of this nature. • This building extension is one that NMU will be proud of. 
