N7, SECTION 1 FROM ATLANTIS SOUTH TO KALBASKRAAL (PHASE 2)

T he second phase of the National Route 7, Section 1 from Atlantis South to Kalbaskraal is is one of several projects over the last decade contributing to the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited’s (SANRAL) process of upgrading National Route 7 (N7) which links Cape Town with the Namibia International border towards the north. The entire section of the N7 in the Western Cape between the Melkbos Interchange just outside Cape Town and the town of Malmesbury has now finally been upgraded to a dual carriageway freeway in line with recommendations made in various traffic studies done. This section of the N7 has been divided by SANRAL into three project phases as follows with AECOM the

successful bidder for all three consulting engineering services appointments: • Phase 1 – Melkbos intersection (Section 1, km 17) to Atlantis South intersection (Section 1, km 26). • Phase 2 – Atlantis South intersection (Section 1, km 26) to Leliefontein (Section 1, km 43). • Phase 3 – Leliefontein (Section 1, km 43) to Hopefield intersection (Section 2, km 6). In February 2012, AECOM was appointed by the client, SANRAL, for consulting services for this phase of the N7 upgrading between Atlantis South intersection to Leliefontein (Phase 2). Upgrading the N7 to a dual carriageway with freeway status meant that all existing at-grade accesses had to be closed and reconciled to an
