REHABILITATION OF 13,4 KM OF TRUNK ROAD 31/2 FROM ASHTON TO MONTAGU THROUGH COGMANSKLOOF, INCLUDING THE NEW ASHTON ARCH BRIDGE

T he project aimed to reconstruct parts of the Trunk Road 31 Sections 2 and 3 from Ashton to Montagu (start of tourist Route 62). This was needed to improve traffic and pedestrian safety, as well as to improve the flood capacity of bridges and resistance of the overtopping of the road at several problem locations. It included the upgrading of the historic Cogmanskloof Pass which was originally completed in 1877 by the renowned road engineer Thomas Bain. The 13 km long road section is also the start of the strategically important tourist ‘Route 62’ with more than 8 000 vehicles travelling through Ashton and 4 000 vehicles through Cogmanskloof Pass toward Montagu every day. The New Ashton Arch is South Africa’s first concrete tied arch bridge constructed using a transverse launching method. It represents a proud moment for the Western Cape Government, Department of Transport and Public Works: Roads Branch, the people of the Ashton-Montagu area, and all the contractors, labourers and suppliers who were involved in the project. AECOM was the appointed structural engineer, while the build was contracted to H&I Construction. State-

of-the-art bridge analysis and software packages were used for the construction stage analysis, in-service analysis and design, a joint effort by AECOM teams in South Africa and the United Kingdom’s long-span complex bridge teams. The management team of H&I Construction worked in close relationship with AECOM to develop meticulously detailed method statements, well in advance of each activity, to ensure compliance and agreement before construction commenced. 
