AFRISAM INNOVATION AWARD FOR SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION

cooling, but also greatly benefits health, productivity and worker well-being for building users as suitable daylight and natural fresh air circulates throughout the building. 354 Mt of CO 2 is saved by using timber on this project when compared to conventional materials. The usage of this natural material enters the lifecycle of the project with a negative embodied carbon content. The final product as installed on site is durable and long- lasting with a service life of 50 years plus, provided by the Accoya timber rainscreen covering that protects the CLT timber façade The Ridge’s structural timber façade is designed to compensate for the slightly off-North-South orientation of the building. The saw-tooth angle façade corrects this orientation. Effectively, this means that the direct sunlight entering the building is controlled. The folded façade performs as a straight deeply shaded façade which significantly reduces the amount of direct sunlight entering the building. This allows for more glazing without external shading devices. The orientation of the operable and active timber façade provides a controlled, natural environment by allowing fresh air into the building via manual

automatic openable windows. Biophilic design increase occupancy connection to the natural environment. This has health, economic and environmental benefits for occupants and urban environments. 
