Hunting accident An accident with a shotgun during a geese hunt over the spring break ended with an air ambulance trip to the hospital for a 16-year-old youth. He and a friend, also aged 16, were stalking geese in a field near Chartrand Road, east of the North Dixon Factory Road in The Nation Municipality on March 18. Sometime late in the afternoon, a shotgun that one of the lads was carrying fired by accident. The shotgun pellets struck the leg of one of the boys. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is reported in stable condition. Police are still investigating the incident but as of press time there were no charges reported. – Gregg Chamberlain
Late spring due for an early end The recent warming temperature situation is making fast work of shrinking the snowpack in the Ottawa River region. Conservation authorities report significant increase in the waterflow in local rivers and streams and that is expected to continue through the next week at least. Some municipalities report nuisance flooding of several rural roads, prompting detour warnings. Many streams show open water curtailing any further snowmobiling or ice fishing activities. Residents are advised to avoid any rec- reation activities along river and stream banks until the water conditions have settled. Parents are also advised to make sure their children know to avoid playing near stream banks during spring thaw conditions. Check the South Nation Conservation Authority website at www.nation.on.ca for regular updates on stream conditiions, including flood warnings. – Gregg Chamberlain
