GLANCING BACK AND GAZING FORWARD

2018 IN REVIEW

It’s been quite a year for me and the law firm.

If you haven’t written a review yet, please feel free to add your own. It’s free to do and extremely helpful for me. I read literally every review that gets posted online. Feedback is important, and it informs me on how I can be a better attorney. When I know I’m doing something right, I can figure out how to do the same thing even better and for a greater number of people. As the year started to wind down, my daughter Jade turned four. It’s been so much fun watching her grow from a toddler to this mini person. She’s learning about the world and now can clearly tell me about everything going on in her imagination.

Early in 2018, my mother passed away. As I shared in the May edition of the newsletter, my mom was a teacher, artist, and a volunteer. She even jammed with Jimi Hendrix during college. It’s always a challenge when a parent passes and even more so when they had such a positive effect on your life.

At the law firm, the year started off on the slow side as we got up to speed on a number of different cases. Thankfully, by the time spring arrived, we were anything but slow. The firm was pushing

forward at full speed. I worked with many new clients and just flat-out got things done. It was a good feeling — and that momentum has yet to let up! One of the high points in the spring was a great jury verdict. It had been a particularly challenging criminal case, but the end result was three counts of not guilty. It was a hard- fought case, for sure, and it’s the kind of win that sticks with you.

Looking forward, I’m ecstatic to see what next year brings. Jade will

continue to grow and explore, and I have no doubt she’ll fall in love with more Disney characters. I can’t even begin to guess what she’ll want to dress up as for next Halloween.

As for the office, well, 2019 is going to be a busy year. I’ve been giving a lot of thought to our next steps as a firm. We are working full time behind the scenes on some very exciting things, including bringing on new team members as we continue to grow.

10.0

Over the course of the year, I’ve also noticed an uptick in five-star reviews from clients. That, too, is a good feeling. It’s heartening when I read a review and see the kind words of appreciation from a client. I’ve said it before, and I want to say it again: Thank you to everyone who has taken a moment to write a review on websites like Google and Avvo.

Of course, my No. 1 goal is always to find ways to better serve our clients. Whether it’s by adding new staff or putting together fresh resources, you can be sure my thoughts are squarely on you, our clients.

A Fun Trend You Can Easily Follow! Ugly Sweater Parties

It’s speculated that the first ugly sweater party took place in Vancouver, Canada, back in 2001. Since then, the trend has become one of the most popular holiday party themes. Come Thanksgiving, you’ll start to see racks in all types of clothing stores lined with hideous sweaters. If you’re ready to jump on the ugly-sweater-party bandwagon this Christmas season, here are a few things to keep in mind.

themed games that should be on the agenda include an ugly gift exchange, which is similar to the white elephant exchange, except with the gaudiest gifts you can find; an ugly photo booth, complete with terrible, tacky props; and, of course, an ugly sweater contest. This is the only time of year when slipping into a lurid red sweater with a stuffed Santa sewn on

Your Very Own Ugly Sweater

Ugly sweaters come in all shapes, sizes, and prices. You can head to H&M or a local thrift store to pick one up. However, if you have a sweater that’s been cozied up for years in the back of your closet or a drawer, now’s your chance to give it new life. Arm yourself with a hot glue gun, thread, and needle, and patch Santa, Rudolph, or Frosty on it. And let it be known that an ugly sweater isn’t complete without sparkles, beads, and sequins galore.

Dangerous driving behavior is something we see all the time. While it’s a year-round issue for commuters throughout Palm Beach County and beyond, the holiday season can often magnify the problem. Drivers hit the road to visit family, and more people get behind the wheel while intoxicated. For the average motorist, driving defensively and paying greater attention on the road can be lifesaving. As you hit the road this holiday season, be on the lookout for these three types of dangerous drivers. Watch Out!

THE 3 TYPES OF DANGEROUS DRIVERS

Frequent Lane Changers These indecisive drivers never seem to be happy with the lane they’re in. They weave in and out of traffic, often without using their turn signals, hoping to get to their destination a few seconds faster — and then you always catch up to them at the next light. This behavior can force other drivers to swerve or hit the brakes, both of which are among the leading causes of rear-end collisions. Speeders Drivers who speed because they are in a hurry or feel that the posted speed limit doesn’t apply to them can often miss critical details and potential hazards. Speeding reduces the amount of time people have to react to hazards in and around the road, from debris and potholes to pedestrians. Distracted Drivers Texting and driving is illegal in Florida, and it carries immense risk. In fact, this careless practice is considered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to be deadlier than drinking and driving. It is especially deadly among younger drivers, ages 16–24. Distracted driving isn’t limited to cellphone usage. Any activity that takes your eyes and attention off the road is considered distracted driving. This includes reaching for an item, eating, grooming, and even gawking at an incident along the road. Any of these actions can carry serious consequences. Be careful out there, and do what you can to get to your holiday destinations as safely as possible.

Holiday Decoration Tours

Get Away and Be Festive This Holiday Season Christmas Tours

There’s nothing quite like the magical lights of the holiday season, and some destinations in the U.S. have perfected the craft of holiday decoration. If you’re looking to get away this December and still engage in seasonal festivities, add one of these places to your must-visit list. New York City’s Rockefeller Center New York City is an iconic location for Christmastime. The scene is like a Hallmark card: Ice-skating lovers whiz past miles of twinkling lights underneath an exceptionally tall and amply decorated tree. The tree is specially selected by Rockefeller Center’s landscaping crews, who scout out trees years in advance. It remains lit from November to early January, so you have plenty of time to check it out. Ranch Christmas in Jackson, Wyoming Jackson, Wyoming, takes its frontier culture to the next level during the Christmas season. All year, the city proudly displays four elk antler arches, but around the holidays, they are lit up with white string lights and flanked by snow. The Christmas decorations and lights surrounding the archway make for a Western-themed holiday pulled

right out of a John Wayne classic. For holiday admirers looking for a unique spin, Jackson has you covered.

Yearly Yuletide in Santa Claus, Indiana This one’s for the Christmas lover. If you can’t make it out to Santa Claus, Indiana, this holiday season, you can still celebrate Christmas in this tiny Midwestern town in January, June, or even October. Embracing its unique name, the town boasts a museum, holiday shopping center, and a Christmas theme park. In a moving tribute, the town’s residents also write responses to children’s letters to Kris Kringle himself. It’s impossible to avoid holiday cheer in this town. Disney World’s Christmas Magic What better place to celebrate the most magical time of the year than in the most magical place on Earth? Walt Disney World’s halls are decked to the max with a parade, gingerbread homes, strings of lights, and festive parties. Plus, costs to visit Disney World can be cheaper during the Christmas season, so keep an eye out for a vacation steal.
