CLAGGETT & SYKES OBTAINS VERDICT FOR FAMILY OF GIRL KILLED BY GARBAGE TRUCK IN LAS VEGAS Jazmin Espana, an 11-year-old girl, was killed in 2017 at an intersection in a Las Vegas neighborhood when she was struck in a crosswalk by a Republic Services garbage truck. Claggett & Sykes represented Jazmin’s family in a wrongful death lawsuit against Republic Services. After a 10-day trial in late August, the jury returned a verdict in favor of Jazmin’s family for $38.750 million. Sean Claggett, lead trial counsel on the case, argued that Republic Services was responsible for Jazmin’s death by employing a driver with a checkered safety record. Jazmin’s tragic death resulted from the driver’s failure to stop before making a right-hand turn into a crosswalk. Initially, the driver said he came to a complete stop before making the turn. However, a surveillance video was discovered that showed the driver did not come to a complete stop before entering the intersection where Jazmin was crossing the street. During trial, Sean Claggett told the jury that the driver’s safety record was so bad that Republic fired the driver, only to hire him a short time later. Mr. Claggett also argued that Jazmin’s death could have been avoided if the driver had simply followed Republic’s own safety policies, which he chose to ignore the day of Jazmin’s death, likely because he was in a hurry to complete his route.
The verdict far surpassed Republic’s initial offer of $250,000, which the company increased to $1 million just before the beginning of the trial.

On Oct. 8, 2021, Claggett & Sykes team members participated in United Way of Southern Nevada’s Day of Caring Event. The workers’ compensation team decided to help a local charity, Future Smiles, by creating bags for children in underprivileged neighborhoods. These goodie bags contained free toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other dental care items. The mission of Future Smiles is to “end oral pain and suffering among Nevada’s neediest children and their families by partnering with the community to deliver essential education, prevention, and restorative services.” Future Smiles provides — free of charge to local students — oral health screenings, protective sealants, fluoride varnish, and smile bags with oral health care supplies. Future Smiles also provides restorative health exams and treatment at the NWP Dental Wellness Center, including dental X-rays, exams, cleanings, sealants, fluoride varnish, fillings, and extractions. • 1 lb Mexican chorizo • 1 white onion, chopped • 1 carrot, chopped • 1 celery rib, chopped • 3 garlic cloves, chopped • 2 cups premade cornbread, crumbled • 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped • 1/2 cup chicken stock • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, for greasing • Cilantro, for garnish • Cotija cheese, for garnish
Workers’ compensation law has several important deadlines you should be aware of. These deadlines are set by statute and generally cannot be modified or excused. 7 Days: You have seven days to notify your employer about an injury, but you should do so as soon as possible. 90 Days: You have 90 days to initiate a claim by filing a C-4 Form. 70 Days: 30 Days: You have 30 days to appeal a decision by the Hearings Officer. 30 Days: You have 30 days to appeal a decision by the Appeals Officer. Missing any of these deadlines could mean the end of your case and the loss of compensation or benefits.

1. Preheat your oven to 350 F.
2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the chorizo for 5 minutes. Add the onion, carrot, celery, and garlic. Cook for 10 additional minutes. Stir in the cornbread and cilantro. 3. While stirring, slowly add the chicken stock. Stir until absorbed. 4. Butter a small casserole dish, then add the stuffing in an even layer. Bake for 20 minutes, garnish as desired, and serve!

FOOTBALL AND THANKSGIVING: A MATCH MADE IN MARKETING HEAVEN
Last year, 30.3 million people tuned in to watch the NFL’s Thanksgiving showdown between the Washington Football Team and the Dallas Cowboys. For those Americans (and probably for you if you’re reading this article), football is as essential to Thanksgiving as turkey and stuffing — but why? As it turns out, there are two answers to that question. The first is that games have been played on the holiday for almost
off in that inaugural Thanksgiving game in Philadelphia, and football has been played on Thanksgiving pretty much ever since! When the NFL was founded in 1920, the Thanksgiving game was official from the get-go. The second reason we watch football on Thanksgiving is more about money than tradition. In 1934, a Detroit Lions coach, George A. Richards, decided that in order to attract more fans, his team would

This idea was a hit from day one! According to Sporting News, the long-unloved Lions “not only sold out the stadium, they also had to turn people away at the gates.” In 1966, the Dallas Cowboys signed on to play every Thanksgiving, too, for similar publicity reasons. Since those early days, football-themed traditions have flourished in American families. Apart from watching games on TV, one of the most popular is organizing a pre-turkey game of family touch football a la the sitcom “Friends.” (Its famed episode “The One With the Football” aired Nov. 21, 1996.)
