OUR MOST RECENT ADDITION Thrilled to Be a Part of the Team

I am so excited to have joined the team at the Law Offices of Daniel J. Miller. I know it has only been a few short months, but the time has flown by and I’ve met so many amazing people along the way. You never really know where the journey of life will bring you, but I’m certainly glad it brought me here. I grew up just outside of Richmond and decided to enroll at the Virginia Military Institute for college. I originally had intentions to join the military but quickly realized my academic skills far outpaced my physical prowess. Moreover, I learned I had an aptitude for law and legal work while at VMI. Instead of joining the military, I enrolled at George Mason University for law school. I graduated from George Mason in 2017 and began working at a small firm where I practiced civil litigation. This firm did not specialize in a specific area, so I gained experience in family law, medical malpractice, and personal injury law among others. After trying out these different areas of law, I felt a calling to family law and decided to make a change. I had heard good things about the Law Offices of Daniel J. Miller and was fortunate to join the team after applying for a position.

What I love about family law is that it is truly forward-looking. We’re trying to set up our clients and their children with a path they can follow in the future. We strive to help families accomplish their goals and set them up for success. My previous work focused on rectifying things that happened in the past instead of looking to the future. I have only been at the Law Offices of Daniel J. Miller since mid-September, but I’ve already had opportunities to work with some amazing clients. By adapting to new experiences and keeping my mind open, I have learned a great deal more about family law that I can apply to various scenarios. I can give legal advice based on our clients’ end goals so they can accomplish whatever they desire. When I meet with clients, I can guarantee they will be met with empathy for and understanding of their unique situation. People don’t usually come to a lawyer’s office when they’re having a great day and we get that. We know the legal side of things and will advise our clients on the outcomes they could receive in each scenario. We will work to accomplish whatever goals our clients desire.

As I continue my journey in law, I hope I can help my clients move forward. I am focused on and committed to supporting our clients in whatever they may need. Family law is my passion and I desire nothing more than using my passion to help people through difficult times. I couldn’t be more thankful for the supportive and helpful staff at the Law Offices of Daniel J. Miller. They’ve welcomed me with open arms and genuinely set me up for success. I look forward to working with you all for years to come. – Jameson Goodell

M erry H oopsmas ! WHY BASKETBALL IS A CHRISTMAS STAPLE

Nothing says Christmas quite like basketball — at least, that’s been the case since 1947. In addition to stockings, eggnog, and general yuletide cheer, each Christmas Day brings about an annual lineup of basketball games featuring the National Basketball Association’s best of the best, and it’s become a time-honored tradition.

Day games, where the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys always play, Christmas Day is now reserved for the NBA’s top teams. In many ways, this is a marketing ploy designed to heighten NBA viewership on a day when few other sports host games, and by using their best teams, the NBA can ensure viewers are treated to great games. However, for loyal fans and viewers, the tradition has sparked a few great moments, including the following greatest games, statistics, and achievements — plus a potential record to watch for this year.

recently, they had the most wins, too, but the Los Angeles Lakers now hold that title.) Point Pros: This year could be a historic one for the NBA. LeBron James is slated to surpass the late Kobe Bryant for the most points scored on Christmas Day. James needs 13 points to outpace Bryant when the Lakers host the Brooklyn Nets this year. However, the title for most points scored on a single Christmas Day game goes to Bernard King of the Knicks, who scored 60 points in a 1984 loss to the then-New Jersey Nets.

But where in the North Pole did this idea come from?

While it’s hard to pinpoint an exact reason, the NBA has hosted Christmas Day games since 1947, when the New York Knicks beat the Providence Steamrollers 89–75. For decades, teams across the league would play their regional rivals on Dec. 25, ensuring the basketball season moved forward and players didn’t have to travel too far from their families.

TIPS TO AVOID A DUI S tay S afe T his N ew Y ear ’ s E ve

New Year’s Eve is fast approaching, and it’s one of the most dangerous nights to be on the road due to alcohol-related accidents. According to Moneygeek, the odds that somebody will be driving under the influence and cause a fatal accident on New Year’s Day is 129% higher than an average day of the week. We don’t recommend that anyone get behind the wheel after drinking, but here are a few tips if you plan to go out and ring in the New Year. Find a Ride If you’ve been drinking, you should not drive home. In this day and age, you can find a ride home in a number of ways. Call

a taxi, Uber, or Lyft to bring you home. Some companies will release coupons and promotions to make using their service more affordable around holidays. This also helps keep more people safe and away from the keys to the car. If these services are too expensive or unavailable at the time you need them, reach out to a friend. Most people would rather go out of their way to help a friend than lose them in an accident or hear they wound up in jail.

of driving completely out of the question. If you’re the designated driver on New Year’s Day, search beforehand where police checkpoints will be set up. And make sure no one spills a drink on you! If you just smell like alcohol and a police officer notices it, they could think you are driving under the influence. Know Your Rights If you are pulled over, you do not have to submit to a mobile Breathalyzer test or a field sobriety test. It will not hurt your case if you refuse, but you will have to take the Breathalyzer test at the station. Also, it’s better to say as little as possible so they can’t use anything you say against you. Be safe out there!

Plan Ahead If you know you’re going to be out

celebrating the New Year, make plans for a ride beforehand. Decide on a designated driver or find a way to get home before you start drinking. This can take the temptation

The Consequences of Violating Probation

state without the permission of the court, and possessing items they were prohibited from possessing or using. The consequences for violating probation can oftentimes bring a harsher punishment than the original charge. By violating the conditions of your parole, you could face serious consequences, which include but are not limited to the following:

Depending on prior convictions and the severity of the charges, many people who are convicted of a crime or plead guilty are placed on probation instead of going to jail. In most cases, this will allow the individual to continue with their regular lives with few interruptions. For those unfamiliar with probation, it is a set of rules laid out as part of a person’s sentence and must be followed either as punishment or to avoid a harsher sentence. The terms of each probationary period vary from person to person but often include reporting to or allowing visits from a probation officer. The person also cannot possess a firearm, use any illegal substance, commit any crime, or leave the state. Following the conditions of your parole is essential to avoiding harsher charges. If you violate your probation, you are committing a crime. People most often violate probation by failing to appear at scheduled court hearings or to their probation officer, traveling out of

Thankfully, there are some defenses to a probation violation claim. The prosecutor must prove you violated probation intentionally, or you were careless in your actions. The best thing you can do if you’re charged with violating your probation is to get an experienced attorney to fight for you. The consequences of a probation violation are extreme, and you do not want to go into a hearing unprepared. We can help solve your problems and create a defense to help your case. If you are worried you will violate probation or if you already have been charged with it, give us a call and we will help build a case and find a resolution.

QUICK GUT HEALTH TIPS FOR TRAVELERS WHY DOES YOUR STOMACHHURTWHILE TRAVELING?

If this situation sounds familiar, here’s how you can keep your gut healthy, no matter where you are this winter.

Traveling is stressful — even for your gut. Dr. Shilpa Ravella, a gastroenterologist at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia University Medical Center, told Healthline, “Travel can be a hectic time … You may be eating out more and eating new foods in new locations, including more processed foods, and it’s easy to overeat in this setting, placing more stress on your digestive system than at home.” The best solution is to take things slow to avoid overeating. Not only does overeating stretch your stomach, but also “research has found that people who overeat are

10 times more likely to need emergency medical attention for food obstruction,” Dr. Ravella says. Also, even if you wake up at 4 a.m. for your first flight, don’t gulp down coffee all morning. Overconsumption of beverages with lots of sugar, caffeine, or alcohol can irritate your gastrointestinal system, especially if you have a sensitive stomach. Instead, drink plenty of water, which can also help alleviate the risk of constipation. If that’s your main concern, keep in mind that Dr. Ravella says a lack of fiber is the main

bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) and loperamide (Imodium) in your carry-on, ready at all times. If your symptoms worsen into fever, bloody diarrhea, bloody vomiting, or severe abdominal pain, see a health care provider right away. Lastly, if you really want to be comfortable while traveling, it might be worth trying a magnesium (magnesium bisglycinate chelate) supplement, which has been shown to improve jet lag and promote relaxation and sleep while traveling. Best of luck!
