Online Scams: Knowledge is Power
Knowledge is power when it comes to preventing scams.
Online scams have become more sophisticated over time, making it more difficult to identify and avoid. Discover some common techniques used by scammers and tips on how to protect yourself.
Targeting those who are socially isolated.
Creating a sense of urgency or scarcity.
Scammers know many older adults live alone and are more likely to engage in friendly interactions with strangers. If you feel uncertain about an interaction with someone you do not know well, or are asked for private information, talk it over with someone you trust. Posing as an authority figure. Many thieves impersonate organizations you might trust without question, including government agencies, debt collection agencies, or utility companies. Verify legitimacy by hanging up, then contacting the agency through the phone number listed on their official website. Never give out sensitive financial information unless you initiate contact.
Scammers try to elicit impulsive action by rushing you to make decisions. They do this by saying an offer is only available for a limited time or that you must make a payment immediately to avoid negative consequences. Never hesitate to slow down and ask questions to avoid making snap decisions.
Tapping into the desire to help others.
Scammers often try to take advantage of personal relationships by impersonating a grandchild or romantic interest and pleading for help. Any time you are asked for money or personal information, verify the recipient’s identity and never send money you cannot afford to lose. Source: ncoa.org/article/how-to-avoid-an-online-scam/
Impersonating a trusted organization.
Imposters may also pose as large, trusted companies or charities to coerce their victims into sending funds. Amazon is the most impersonated business for online scams. Look for red flags such as poor grammar, suspicious links, or requests for payment through prepaid debit cards, gift cards, online payment apps, or cryptocurrency.
