Care Volunteer Training

Disclosure

As with child safeguarding, be extremely mindful of how you act when an adult discloses abuse to you.

You must be respectful and honest , and try not to rush to ask questions and instead record as much as you can before reporting to an appropriate authority. It’s very important that you tell them exactly what you’re going to do next. You need to report the abuse you’ve just learnt about, so let the person know calmly and respectfully that this is going to be your next step.

Remember...

DO

DON'T

Do listen carefully and take it seriously. Do reassure the person appropriately. Do stay calm. Do go at their pace. Do explain what you will do next.

Don’t ask questions. Don’t make comments or judgements. Don’t appear shocked or angry. Don’t rush or stop them. Don’t promise to keep it a secret. Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
