How To Help Someone Who is Choking.
What is choking?
Choking is characterised by the sudden onset of difficulty in breathing associated with coughing or gagging.
The majority of choking events occur during feeding/eating and play and are therefore usually witnessed by an adult allowing interventions to start immediately. Suspect choking caused by a foreign body if: the onset was very sudden there are no other signs of illness there are clues to alert the rescuer (e.g. a history of eating or playing with small items immediately prior to the onset of symptoms).
Remember if the individual is coughing effectively, no external manoeuvre is necessary. When the cough is inadequate or absent, shout for help and commence the appropriate choking rescue steps.
