21/22 MAST YOUNG PLANTS
Albertano “Tano” Hernandez , production manager at Mast Young Plants, passed away unexpectedly from COVID-19 while in Mexico visiting his family on June 16, 2020. Tano took great pride in not only getting a job done on time, but also in getting it done with excellence. He exemplified our core values of adaptability, constant improvement, and always wanting to win, tackling new tasks and projects with his characteristic positive attitude and a smile. He led by example, viewed challenges as opportunities, and faithfully helped not only those on his team but other teams as well succeed in their work. In his 36 years at the greenhouse, Tano was known as a loyal team player. He cultivated many lifelong friendships with coworkers and industry colleagues who recount many stories of his patience, integrity, understanding, and sense of humor. We will always remember the way he lit up when asked about his kids and while speaking of his family both here in Michigan and in Mexico. We miss him tremendously.
We dedicate this 2021-2022 catalog to our beloved colleague and friend.
Welcome Welcome to the 2021 – 2022 Mast Young Plants Spring Liner Catalog! It is our pleasure to present this program to you, and we trust this will be useful to you as you build your greenhouse programs for the upcoming year. We are especially proud to be part of this industry that brought joy to so many in such challenging times. With many people unexpectedly spending extended periods of time at home in the last year, horticultural products brightened yards, patios, and decks when people needed natural beauty and healthy outdoor activity in their lives. We are particularly grateful for the many breeders, brokers, growers, and customers whose partnership and collaboration helped connect people with plants. As you look through this 2021 – 2022 catalog, you will find a full range of plant genetics specifically selected for their quality. We maintain a large trial garden each summer for the sole purpose of field-trialing varieties we sell and are considering selling, and we select only the highest quality product for inclusion in our program. We present this program to you, with confidence that you will successfully grow these varieties and that they will delight your customers. Our catalog also introduces over 130 exciting new varieties which join tried-and-true varieties customers love planting in their home flower beds. In addition to providing you with quality rooted liners, we maintain current information and relevant resources on our website, www.mastyoungplants.com. The “MYP News” tab is regularly updated with news from our innovating department, information about new products, and trial garden updates that can help you succeed in your growing operation. Thank you again for choosing Mast Young Plants. We are honored to be your young plant supplier!

EARLY ORDERING:
WORKING WITH MYP - A CUSTOMER’S GUIDE At Mast Young Plants when the new season’s program has been successfully built and loaded onto the broker’s systems, MYP Customer Service is able to start booking orders. This booking cycle begins at the end of July for shipping weeks 40-20. Below are some advantages of booking as early as possible. • The availability is good and you are more likely to get confirmed what you are looking for on those early orders. • We have an early order discount (EOD) which lowers your cost on your plants. This discount applies to all orders booked by October 31, 2021. • Getting your order in early helps to ensure that your order will not be cut if a shortage arises during production. Sometimes there are issues with cuttings coming in that affect our ability to fill orders. Generally these cuts are made to the orders most recently booked. Often people worry about placing an early order because they don’t know exactly what they want, or they need to decide on a few new items before booking. It may be advantageous to just put your initial order in early for the majority of what is required. This way the bulk of the order is confirmed early, and if there are changes made before production is started, we should be able to fulfill these requests. Each year we get orders, for example, coming in the middle of February for shipping in March and people don’t understand why we can’t fill them completely. They ask us if we’ve had a crop failure. The simple answer is no, trays are grown to order. We do not prebook everything and then let people book off the availability. We book the orders with the cutting suppliers only as the orders from brokers and customers come into us. We do have some speculation and over start which we can book these last-minute orders from, but often there isn’t enough there to cover a full order.
We get our catalog out to you, our customers, by July so you have time to plan your season and order as early as possible. It is our goal at MYP to fulfill a high percentage of the orders entrusted to us. You can help us by booking as early as possible. This ensures a successful season for both of us.

OUR LIVING CATALOG :
This catalog gives you a lot of choices as you search for the right varieties, colors, patterns, and plant habits for your customers. They trust you to supply them with beautiful and reliable plants, and you can trust us to provide you with the highest quality varieties for your greenhouse. Our commitment to your success includes carefully evaluating the varieties that we offer you in our catalog. The most important way we do this is through our annual summer trial garden. We call this our “living catalog” because we field trial the varieties that we offer in our catalog. This allows us to see their performance in actual garden conditions, compare genetics across varieties, evaluate new introductions to the marketplace, and appraise the performance of novel combinations. We only select varieties for our catalog that meet our high-quality standards, and which we are confident we can grow well for you. All varieties are sorted by genera and are clearly labeled, offering visitors a unique opportunity to compare size, color, and vigor to make informed selections and to select the perfect plant for their needs. Our “living catalog” allows you to choose with confidence. Our trial garden is highly regarded across the industry for the variety, novelty, and quality of the plants we grow and display: “I am focusing on breeder recipe deco containers. These colorful designer combinations flourished in the Mast Young Plants Trial Gardens at my visit in August.” Vaughan’s View, Greenhouse Product News, February 2021 “Textbook filler-spiller-thriller mixes featuring petunias, verbena, calibrachoa, and a dracaena spike will always appeal to customers seeking traditional favorites. To entice buyers looking for more creative and distinctive combinations options, we’re encouraging growers to think outside the box.” Greenhouse Grower, September 2020
S
“ I want to highlight and focus on window planters that have been a part of the trial since its inception. This is the most extensive window box trial I have seen in all my years of evaluations. ” Vaughan’s View, Greenhouse Product News, January 2021
We’re eager to offer our customers, sales representatives, and breeders the opportunity to experience our program offerings live at our annual summer trial garden. Our garden is open to the public from July – September, and our experienced staff is always pleased to share what we’re learning and discovering with our garden visitors. We hosted socially distanced guests safely in our garden during the midst of the pandemic in the summer of 2020, and we created a video journal of top-performing varieties that we shared with those unable to attend in person. See our website to download a copy of our 2020 trial garden report and to learn about the trial garden updates. Follow along with us on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn this summer as we will again be providing trial garden updates related to top performers, visitor favorites, and feature trial results.
