LIGHT (cont. from p. 20) eleven weeks, still she let her son know that she considered him nothing but a failure in life. At last she returned to Texas, sad dened, but more than ever deter mined to pray her son out of the clutches of the world, the flesh, and the devil. She had some plain, parting words: “ It’s what is at the center of your life that counts, Bill. There you have abso lutely nothing.” In his serious moments Bill admitted that it was so ; there was a void a mile wide in his inner being. Once more, however, he shrugged off the pr i cks of conscience and plunged more deeply into his dazzling career. The Lord’s hand appeared in another incident as well. In the spring of 1957, Bill signed for a season of summer stock on Long Island. That was the year of the Billy Graham Crusade in Madi son Square Garden. The newspa per accounts and photographs of the evangelist intrigued Bill. Billy Graham himself looked like a movie star; his publicity — the breath of life to the theater—was fantastic. More than that, the au diences were fabulous, interfer ing with the traffic of the huge metropolis. Bill determined to get into the Garden some way to see for himself what gimmicks for appealing to the crowds the evan gelist used. Finally on the night of May 28th, he pushed his way through the throngs to the only available seat in the top balcony. This was a disappointment be cause he wanted to study Billy Graham at c lose range. Soon, however, the deep-toned soloist, Beverly Shea, claimed his atten tion with the s t i r r i ng hymn, “ How Great Thou Art!” Bill had to fight off the influence of those wonderful words but it was noth ing to the moving effect of the Scriptures that the evangelist was quoting, verses the young ac tor had learned at his mother’s knee: “ For God so loved the world that He gave His only be gotten Son . . .
