L S D L y s e r g ic a c id d ie t h y l a m id e , or LSD, was first synthesized in Switzerland in 1938, and its effect upon the mind was discovered in 1943. Attempts to use it clinically to treat mental illness and alcohol ism have so far been disappointing. It has given temporary relief from pain in terminal cases of cancer. It is said that it can be taken safely only under professional su pervision in a hospital, and then only by people who are mentally and emotionally stable. But the fact is that an increasingly large number of young people all over the country are taking it without any supervi sion “ just for kicks” or to defy adult authority. James L. Goddard of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says, “Unless strong concentrated action is taken, an untold number of students may suffer permanent mental and physical injury.” A popu lar magazine reports that the gov ernment now declares LSD “ a prob lem worse than the narcotics evil.” It is easily synthesized, and it seems that much of the LSD in use comes from the chemical laboratories of colleges and is produced by stu dents. It is very inexpensive, though on the black market it may cost $5 or even $10 for a dose. In the larger cities it is said that anyone can get it merely by making a few discreet inquiries. Since it is colorless, odor less, and tasteless, it is easily smug gled from its place of synthesis to anywhere else. It may be soaked up in a piece of newspaper, a handker chief, or a cube of sugar. Since a favorite way of dispensing it is in sugar cubes, children may become victims, thinking they have found some sugar.
