T h e y m a y b e 17 or 18. He has fuzz on his cheeks; she has stars in her eyes. All of a sud­ den, or after months of hand­ holding, they utter those magic words: “Let’s get married.” To them it seems so easy. All they need is a license, maybe par­ ents’ consent (willing or reluc­ tant), a proper ceremony and a nest to call their own. Then, as in every romance, the rest comes naturally: “ . . . and they lived happily ever after.” It’s a pretty dream, and once in a while it comes true. But most often, the portrait of radiant girl and awkward boy is soon smudged by grim reality, then failure, even tragedy. The teen­ age marriage that survives with­ out a severe crisis or final catas­ trophe is the exception. Teen-agers flock to the altar by the hundreds of thousands. About one out of two brides this year will be under 20. And 14 out of every 100 teen-age boys now enjoy (or resent) the state of wedlock. Yet look at the odds against success for a teen-age marriage: One out of two will end up in separation or the divorce courts. The chance of success for a teen­ age marriage in the U.S. is about a third as good as for marriages of those in their twenties. There are upward of 70,000 teen-agers who have married, regretted, and now stand in the ranks of the divorced or separated. World War II triggered the current pattern of early mar­ riage. Young couples snatched at a moment of happiness now for the future was unpredictable and
