unimportant. “War brides” be­ came almost a label of distinc­ tion. The pattern remained, perhaps because postwar generations have found a future built on atom bombs, the draft, Korea and Viet­ nam as precarious as their par­ ents found life in World War II. Today more girls marry at age 18 than at any other age. Over half a million girls ages 15 through 18 live the role of wives and usually mothers, and almost 200,000 husbands under 19 try to be heads o f households. Wherever they look — in the ads, on newsstands, on TV, at the movies — the kids see young love romanticized. There’s a mod­ ern Rambler, the latest in dish­ w ash ers , air-conditioning, a brand-new convertible at the curb, she in her chiffon, he in his well-tailored jacket and slacks. For the young and the impres­ sionable and the immature, mar­ riage seems to be the magic key to all these pleasures of modern life, be they material, cultural or sexual. The broken home or the home torn by poverty or discord is a fertile breeding ground for can­ didates for teen-age matrimony. The child raised in such an atmo­ sphere looks for escape through a mate who will provide the emo­ tional warmth that home never gave. Or the spur may be an un­ happy social life, often worsened by failure or near failure in school. Domesticity looks like an instant cure for what are really serious emotional or psychologi­ cal difficulties. It seems like a way to avoid the frustrations of maturing in an unfriendly world. A University of Nebraska stu­ dy found in a survey of married girls from 14 to 18 that 31 per­ cent of them had been pregnant at marriage. A postcript to this dismal index of moral breakdown is the finding that premarital pregnancy later becomes a major source of resentment between teen-age husband and wife.
