A NOTE FROM SYLVIA
The unwavering support of our members is the bedrock of everything we do at Twin Cities PBS (TPT). With federal funding for public media at risk, your commitment to TPT has never been more vital. Thank you for being a part of our community. As a result of your support we deliver extraordinary content every day, all day — over-the-air, online and on demand — covering many interests and accessible to everyone at no charge. Whether you are a drama lover who waits for each “Masterpiece” premiere, a devoted “PBS News Hour” viewer, or a travel enthusiast who craves programs like “Nature,” “Relish” or Rick Steves trusted guides to Europe, we have something for you. On Sunday, May 4, we will premiere “Miss Austen,” a four-part series under the “Masterpiece” umbrella, while on Wednesday, May 7, we bring you “Nature: Hummingbirds of Hollywood,” a stunning documentary that showcases the work of Terry Masear. In addition, music lovers will delight in “Great Performances: Girl from the North Country,” a reimagining of 20 legendary Bob Dylan songs set in 1934 Duluth that premieres on Friday, May 23. As we approach Memorial Day, we come together to honor and remember the men and women of the U.S. military who have died in service to our country. The annual “Memorial Day Concert” from Washington, D.C. airs on Sunday, May 25, offering a moving tribute to the service and sacrifice of our military members and their families. TPT would not be able to offer these remarkable programs without you. Your contributions are the foundation of everything we do at TPT. You power the content we deliver to your screens, the community programs that cultivate our connections and the educational initiatives that shape future generations. In the face of mounting threats to public media’s sustainability, your support ensures that TPT remains a trusted, independent and local resource. If you are able to increase your contribution to TPT, please visit TPT.org/ActNow. As we defend the future of free, accessible, educational programming, we must stand together now more than ever. Thank you for being an integral part of our community, for ensuring that TPT remains Minnesota’s storyteller and for standing with us in our essential mission.

LEGISLATIVE SESSION COVERAGE On TPT’s statewide MN Channel, viewers in every corner of the state can stay up to date with daily coverage of the legislative session. This gavel-to- gavel live programming allows Minnesotans to follow the issues they care about most, while also gaining exposure to a variety of viewpoints. 92% of viewers said the legislative telecast helped them feel more informed about key issues in the state, while 89% reported having a better understanding of the legislative process. TPT NOW TPT NOW is a 24/7 resource dedicated to public safety, health and emergency preparedness, filling crucial communication gaps and ensuring multilingual communities are ready and resilient during crises. As the only broadcast outlet in the country delivering real-time emergency alerts in four languages (English, Hmong, Somali, Spanish), TPT NOW collaborates with public safety, health and community leaders to create broadcast, online and social media communications in multiple languages. TPT NOW continues to bridge the communication divide between public safety and health officials, and cultural communities. We rely on TPT NOW to help spread health and safety information to underserved communities. There is value in being able to alert more Minnesotans with weather warning in English, Spanish, Hmong, and Somali languages. – ERIC WAAGE, DIRECTOR OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT, HENNEPIN COUNTY
NEXT AVENUE In 2012, TPT launched Next Avenue, an online platform for adults age 50+. Next Avenue serves a broad and loyal national audience: In fiscal year 2024, 2.2 million people visited NextAvenue.org, with nearly 3 million estimated by the end of the year. Media partners including Forbes.com, MarketWatch and PBS.org have picked up Next Avenue stories, bringing them to larger audiences. In 2024, the site featured two major story collections: • Advocates for Aging: Next Avenue published interviews with eight Advocates for Aging, representing the fields of health, caregiving, public policy, activism and journalism. Former “PBS News Hour” anchor Judy Woodruff was among those honored. • Stories on Mental Health: In February 2024, Next Avenue launched a series of 20 new stories on mental health and older adults titled “Talking About It.”

Celebrating My Milestone Birthday With an MRI By Jason DeRusha
When I turned 40, I had a party with 150 people at a local brewery. I celebrated my 50th with an MRI. My first MRI to be exact. Diagnosis: I'm getting older. Like most men, I spent my 20s, 30s and 40s blissfully avoiding the doctor. Of those the Cleveland Clinic got to actually admit it, 55% of men said they don't get regular health screenings. Why do men avoid the doctor? We don't like bad news, we think if we avoid things they'll go away, we don't want to step on the scale and be told that we need to eat less and drink less. Maybe I'm channeling my own reasons on that last point.
Like ground pork sliding into a casing, I was strapped in and slid into the magnetic resonance imaging machine (sorry for the Midwest sausage reference.) It was loud, I listened to Hits One on satellite radio to pass the time. Then the waiting! Did I tear my rotator cuff? Is there arthritis? God forbid a tumor? Then the follow-up appointment with the answer for the shoulder pain: inflammation. Inflammation? "Doc, is this just because I'm getting older?" I asked the orthopedic doctor. "Well, probably," he replied. THAT'S IT? Is this what life is going to be now? Unexplained pain, annoying, persistent, unsolvable? I got a steroid injection in each shoulder and then a prescription for a couple weeks of physical therapy. Come to think of it, I have to take a break and do the exercises that make my wife laugh at me.
Why do men avoid the doctor? We don't like bad news, we think if we avoid things they'll go away, we haven't been conditioned to make regular doctors' appointments like women do.
I decided it was time to make a change. Maybe part of it is seeing my formerly healthy father- in-law start the long goodbye due to Alzheimer’s disease. Maybe it's because my shoulder has been hurting me for a year, and it wasn't getting better. Maybe I'm just growing up. I'm not sure when things changed that you can't just go to your doctor to have your pain looked at, but I needed to see one doctor for my upper arm pain and a different doctor for the lower back pain.

How Aging Might Encourage Altruism By Gina Rich
"Young people today are so selfish!" It's a common sentiment that might sound harsh. But there is truth behind it: In a 2024 review of literature on altruism, researchers found that compared with younger people, older individuals displayed more prosocial behavior — actions that helped others. Researchers have found that as we age, our brains respond differently to altruistic behavior. And these changes in our brains could be making us more likely to focus on others' well-being. From an evolutionary perspective, prosocial behavior has been key to humanity's survival. "It should be baked into our DNA to be at the very least cooperative," says Jane Piliavin, professor emerita of sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. But why do older adults tend to be more concerned with others' well-being, from donating money to volunteering? Older individuals may have more disposable income or a desire to leave a positive legacy. But Piliavin chalks it up to something more mundane: If you're older and retired, you no longer have to spend several hours per day working. You might do more for others simply because "you have more time," she says. Could this increased prosocial behavior also have something to do with how our brains react to helping others? To answer this question, researchers first needed to determine what a genuine altruistic response would look like in the brain, says Ulrich Mayr, a University of Oregon neuroscientist.
Our brains contain "a large network of areas that all sort of move in the same direction when something positive happens," says Mayr. "We often call them the reward areas." Mayr and other researchers used MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to see how people's reward areas responded when money from an unspecified source was donated either to a charity or to the participants themselves. Because participants were passively watching the charitable transaction, there was nothing in it for them — they received neither social accolades nor the "warm glow" of making a gift. Most participants' brains showed at least some favorable response to the charitable donation. Researchers concluded those people were displaying genuine or pure altruism.
