NAS Oceana Air Show &
The NAS Oceana Air Show is leading the way in STEM education through its innovative “Outdoor STEM Laboratory,” a groundbreaking partnership with area schools. Working with Virginia Beach and Chesapeake Public Schools, the Air Show transforms into an interactive learning environment, reaching approximately 6,300 fifth graders annually. Since its inception in 2016, this program has engaged over 30,500 students in hands-on STEM exploration. This unique STEM Lab provides immersive and age-appropriate activities designed to ignite a passion for STEM. Emphasizing small group learning (5:1 student/chaperone ratio), students are guided through challenges by STEM professionals and volunteer organizations. The STEM Lab’s accessibility extends beyond the school day, remaining open during the Air Show weekend for the entire community to enjoy. For 75 percent of the participants, this is their first encounter with the Navy, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the opportunities available, despite the familiar sound of jets overhead. The invitation onto NAS Oceana opens a window to potential careers and inspires future aspirations. This impactful event relies on strong partnerships across diverse STEM fields, including universities, state entities, military commands, and prominent industry leaders. Previous STEM Labs at the Air Show have benefited from over 2,000 engagement hours provided by more than 200 Department of the Navy personnel, nearly 100 informal educators, and 200 high school volunteers, facilitating 182 hands-on STEM experiences. We hope you will consider joining us on the flight line!
