Wi Yuh, the Indian Girl ot long ago , there lived on the shore o f Lake Erie a little Indian girl named W i Yuh (W e Y ou ). While she was yet quite young, her father sent her to a mission boarding school for Indian girls. The teacher o f this school was a kind Christian lady who loved her scholars and tried in every way to make them truly happy. W i Yuh soon learned to love her teacher very much. One day she walked up to her and said, “Teacher, I want to give myself away to you.” A t first the teacher did not know what she meant, and looking steadily into her black eyes, she asked, “And why does W i Yuh wish to give herself away to me?” “ Because I love you,” she said. The teacher cheerfully consented to take W i Yuh for her own. After that, all the scholars in the school called W i Yuh “ the teacher’s girl.” One day while she was sitting by the teacher’s side, learning how to sew, the teacher asked her if she loved Jesus. “ I do not,” she replied, “but I want to love Him and be a Christian like you, but I am too little.” “ No, dear W i Yuh,” the teacher replied, “you are not too little. If you are old enough to love me, you are old enough to love Jesus. He loves you already, and says, ‘Suffer the little children to come unto me.’ ” “ But I don’t know how to come to H im ; I don’t know the way,” W i Yuh replied. “You must give yourself away to Him,” the teacher said. The little Indian girl looked at her teacher in wonder and surprise. “ How can I do that?” she asked. “How did you give yourself away to me?" “ I just came to you and asked you to take me, and you did,” W i Yuh replied. “And why did you ask me to take you?” “ Because I loved you,” said W i Yuh. “And why did you love me, dear?” “ It must have been because you loved me,” said W i Yuh. “Yes, dear W i Yuh, that was just the reason. Now Jesus has been loving you ever since you were born, but you have not loved Him at all. He wants your will to obey Him and your heart to love Him.” W i Yuh sat very still for a while, think ing about what she had just heard. By and by she looked up, and addressing her teacher, said, “ Teacher, if I should give myself away to Jesus as I gave myself to you, do you think He would take me?” “ Oh, yes, dear W i Yuh, I know He would. He says so in the Bible. That is just what He means when He says, ‘Come unto me,’ and, ‘Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.’ He would not ask you to come if He did not mean to take you. He wants your lips to speak for Him, your feet to walk for Him, your hands to work for Him, and your whole heart to love Him. Are you willing to give Him these?” A fter thinking a while, W i Yuh came and knelt at her teacher’s side, and with her help, offered this little prayer: “ Lord Jesus, I give myself to Thee. I give Thee my hands to work for Thee, my feet to walk for Thee, my lips to speak for Thee, and my whole heart to love Thee. I give Thee everything. Please take me, dear Saviour. Amen.”
