CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR . . . B y M ary G. G oodner

SEPTEMBER 4, 1932 W H A T IS OUR ATTITUDE TO W ARD WORK AND THE WORKER E cclesiastes 9:10; 1 T hessalonians 4:9-12 Suggestions for the Meeting Hymn—“Work, for the Night is Com ing.” Hymn—“ Onward, Christian Soldiers.” Prayer. Scripture Verses by All in Response to Roll Call. Quartet Number— “T o the Work.” Round Table Discussion Led by Pre viously Appointed Leaders: Why are working men often opposed to the church? How can we make work happy? How can we win working men to Christ ? Offering and Announcements. Hymn— “Rescue the Perishing.” Close with Psalm 19:14 in Concert. Meditation on the Lesson W ork is one of God’s gifts to man. In the beautiful nature song, Psalm 104, a vivid contrast is drawn between night and day. “ Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth. The young lions roar a f ter their prey, and seek their meat from God. The sun ariseth, they gather them selves together, and lay them down in their dens. Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening.” Contrast is great between the restless beasts and the labor of man, calm and cheerful. Regular work is in this picture accepted as the natural lot of man, in which he is fulfilling the purpose o f God with respect to him. Work is a moral necessity. The fourth commandment is often overlooked. “ Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work” is as much a part of the command ment as is, “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.” The day o f rest is to be kept, not only for the glory o f God, but also for the sake o f the physical welfare o f man, thereby enabling him to do better work. Work is moral and is the great civilizing agency. Work is honorable and a safeguard from the inevitable degredation which fol lows idleness. God has forever set His seal of approval on work, by His own example. Jesus said, “My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.” Again,_ Jesus said, “ I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh when no man can work.” Our attitude toward; work and the worker should be one o f praise, enthusi asm, and interest. As men grow in grace and in the knowledge o f the Lord Jesus Christ, they have saner ideas concerning labor, and the laborer. No longer do they “look down” on the working man; they

honor his energy, his thrift, his indepen dence. In fact, as men know the Lord, all false ideas vanish, while realities and truth take their places. There would be no capital and labor problem if all men were true believers in and followers o f the Lord Jesus Christ. Discussion Material I. B e S trong Be strong! W e are not here to play, to dream, to drift, W e have hard work to do and loads to lift, Shun not the struggle— face it; ’tis God’s gift, Be strong! . •—B abcock . II. M y M aster W as a W orker Our Master toiled, a carpenter O f busy Galilee, 1 He knew the weight o f ardent tasks, And ofttimes, wearily, He sought, apart in earnest prayer, For strength beneath His load of care. He took a manly share of work, No thoughtless shirker He, From dawn to dusk, before His bench, He labored faithfully. He felt just pride in work well done, And found sweet rest at setting sun. His Father worked, and He rejoiced That holiest toil was His, To whom was given grace to know Divinest mysteries: A n d shall we not find toiling good Who serve in labor’s brotherhood? Redeeming the Time Redeem the time! God only knows How soon our little life may close, With all its pleasures and its woes. Redeem the time! Redeem the time! It goeth fast; Then use it well, buy back the past, And think each day may be our last. Redeem the time! Redeem the time, and that with might! Far spent the day, quick falls the night; Soon closed the race, and fought the fight. Redeem the time! —A lliance W eekly . My Master was a worker, With daily work to do, And he who would be like Him Must be a worker, too. —T arrant . III. T he C arpenter of G alilee —T. C. C lark .

“ Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon u s: and establish thou the work o f our hands upon u s; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it” (Psa. 90:17). “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest” (Eccl. 9: 10 ). “ Be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the Lord, and work: for I am with you, saith the Lord o f hosts” (Hag. 2 :4 ). “ If any would not work, neither should he eat” (2 Thess. 3:10). Hymn—-“ The Solid Rock.” Benediction—Numbers 6 :24-26. Meditation on the Lesson What a marvelous opportunity the lead er of this meeting has to magnify and glo rify the Lord! The supreme message of the Book is God’s care for His own. Be cause He cares, Jesus left His heavenly home and came to earth to live, to suffer, and to die. The whole history'of the children of Is rael is the never-failing, loving interest of Jehovah, the covenant-keeping God, in His chosen ones. Listen to His own words in Exodus 19:4 : “ Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.” Again, in Deuteronomy 29 :5 : “And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot.” All through the con quest o f Canaan, during the time o f the SEPTEMBER 11, 1932 DOES GOD CARE?
