o f our Lord and the salvation o f others. Merely to beat back your foes_ is but a small part of the great commission o f the Christian soldier. He is called not only, to; wield the shield o f faith but also the sword of the Spirit by which he moves against the conquered foe and claims new territory with each advance... The best way to keep the devil off our territory is to keep him busy on his own, defending his kingdom from our bold attack.—A. B. S impson ; AUGUST 26 T he I ncentive to P rayer “Men ought always to pray and not faint” (Lk. 18:1). “Men ought always to pray.” Such is the fervent pressure o f the Master’s word. And what He urged others to do, He was always doing Himself. He prayed always. He prayed in the brilliant sunshine when the multitude would have taken Him and made Him king. He prayed in the night when He was betrayed, and when all others had fled. He prayed in the open fields when He was feeding the famished crowd. He prayed by the grave o f Laz arus. He prayed in the midst pf the pesti lence that walketh in darkness; He prayed in the midst of the destruction that wasteth at noonday. Most surely He exemplified the counsel which He gave to His disciples when He said that “men ought always to pray.”—J. H. J owett . AUGUST 27 . I ndescribable C harm “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). “Preferred before me, because he was before me” (John 1 :30). Let us cultivate a divine self-oblivion. When you are cultivating style and elo quence, you may hear the shouts o f a mul titude praising the beauty of your bow and arrows, and the skill with which you handle them; but it is only when you lose yourself in God that you hear the groans of the wounded, which, are the supreme test o f your skill as an archer, and which remind us of the shrieks o f the mandrake when it is pulled up by the roots. Out of God’s pavilion let us come to speak to men, and let even the shining face bear witness that the chrism o f a celestial presence has left with us its divine and it indescribable charm!—A. T. P ierson . “ Walk worthily o f the Lord unto all pleasing, bearing fruit in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge o f God” (Col. 1:10, R. V .). Many who are exceptionally tempted think that their temptations are evidence o f exceptional wickedness on their part, and they get grievously discouraged. So far is this from being the truth, that ex ceptional temptation is usually rather a sign o f exceptional grace. Without doubt, the sinless One was the most tempted of all:—G eorge H. C. M ac G regor . “Life is a burden — bear it ; Life is a duty — serve it; Life is a thorn-crown — wear it Though it break your heart in twain. Though the burden crush you down, Close your lips and. hide your pain. First thé cross and then the crown.” AUGUST 28 T he C ro S s — T hé C rown
