The ability o f God is beyond our prayers! I have been thinking o f some of the petitions that have entered into my supplications innumerable times. What have I asked for ? I have asked tor a cup ful, and the ocean remains 1 I have asked for a sunbeam, and the sun abides! My best asking falls immeasurably short of my Father’s giving! It is beyond what we ask.—J. H. J owett . SEPTEMBER 10 S ervants of C hrist “I am thy servant” (Psa. 119:125). His service is perfect freedom. T o serve the Lord Christ is not an Egyptian servi tude. The children o f God are not “gal ley slaves,” though we would work like any slave for love o f God’s dear Son. No labor is mean when performed with a sin gle eye to serve that Son. From the great est to the least, there is work for all— “to every man his work.” Faithful and steady toil will bring a sure reward. Toil on, fel low-servant, at whatever thou art doing for Christ, and throw thy heart into it, for nothing done unto Him will be overlooked when He reckons with His servants, who “ shall not lose their reward” (Mk. 9:41). —F ranklin F erguson . SEPTEMBER 11 T he C limax of G race “ That they might be unto me . . . for a glory” (Jer. 13:11).. . It is a common thing with all believers, yea, the very foundation o f their Christian faith, that they find out what the Lord is to them. But how little stress seems to be laid in teaching, converse, or meditation, upon that other side o f the divine revela tion—what we are intended to be unto the Lord 1 . . . W e are His, for a purchased possession and a chosen inheritance. . . . But a much more wonderful thing is it that we might be unto Him for a glory. It is the very climax of grace to reveal such a purpose, and to make possible such a call ing as this!—H ubert B rooke . Examine yourself as with a lighted can dle, to see if there be any lurking abomina tion barring His entrance. This waiting on the Lord implies great activity o f mind. Your whole nature is awakened and on the stretch to discover the indications that God is likely to give you what you have asked of Him. You take up bundles o f promises, one after another, and examine them with the utmost care. Your faculties are sharp ened, so that you see wonderful things in them at a glance. You master them as you advance, and take hold o f them confident ly, as a warrior grasps a trusty blade. The deep things of God become open to you. . . The thirst o f your soul is greatly increased above what it was when you first began thus to wait upon the Lord. Yet you have received, if the truth were told, al ready far greater treasures than were in your conception when you first set out. How admirably God deals with you, con ferring such great things upon you, and yet maintaining in full force the intensity o f your desires!—G eorge B owen . SEPTEMBER 12 W aiting on the L ord “ Wait on the Lord, be o f good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart" (Psa. 27:14).
waters, the standard of the Lord shall be thy reward. Say to my faltering will, The right is on thy side; “ Lo 1 I am with you alway, even unto the end o f the world.” Though the waters rise up to the brim, they shall not overflow me, if only Thy voice shall say, “Well done,” if only there shall gleam behind me that standard of rectitude which is the lifting up o f the banner o f Thy power. —G eorge M atheson . SEPTEMBER 6 U ntil H e C omes \ “ Occupy till I come” (Lk. 19:13). “ Do business till I come” Our Lord’s command is clear.
Christian Faith and Life
A Monthly Magazine for men in every walk in life. Theologians, Educators, Scientists, Ministers, Students, and Laymen of every con tinent are listed among its readers. It has a Fundamental Conviction. It is that Truth belongs to man in his total nature; and that mere intellect can never arrive. It has a Fundamental Faith. It is that the Bible is God’s supernatural redemptive self disclosure, crowned in Jesus Messiah His Eter nal Son, Who is Truth. To this Faith it seeks to relate all facts. By this Faith it measures all speculations. Above all it sees Christ tower, and to en throne Him both in faith, in worship, in sci ence, is its devotion. No leaving things undone Because the Lord is near. “Do business”—let no wile O f Satan stop your work. No time to idle this— Christ’s servants must not shirk. “Do business till” —He said; W ork on, until we hear Our Master’s summons, “ Home” T o all who hold Him dear. “Do business”—till He come, And we shall hear our Lord: “ O faithful slave, well done! Share thou My great reward.”

SEPTEMBER 7 L eave it to H im “I girded thee, though thou hast not known me” (Isa. 45:5). Do not let us take our lives into our own hands. W e may be clever enough to com mit suicide, but we are not clever enough to undertake a successful manipulation of that wondrous mystery which we call our selves. The great difficulty with man is that he will not follow the advice, the counsel, the revelation of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ told men not to be corrosively anxious. O f course if you have only com mitted a part of your life to God, you must look after the part that you have not com mitted to God. But if you have com mitted your way unto the Lord, every inch and every mile o f it, do not interfere with it. But we must do something? Certainly. What is that something? Obey; obedience is religion, obedience is triumph. —J oseph P arker . SEPTEMBER 8 T he W ill to O bey “ The meek will he guide in judgment” (Psa. 25:9). If there is any reserve o f will upon any point, it becomes almost impossible to find out the mind of God in reference to that point; and therefore the first thing is to be sure that you really do purpose to obey the Lord in every respect. I f you only need to know the will o f 'God in order to con sent to it, then you surely cannot doubt His willingness to make His will known. There are many very clear promises in ref erence to this. Settle this point, then, first o f all, that divine guidance has been promised, and that you are sure to have it, if you ask for it ; and let no suggestion of doubt turn you from this.—H. W . S. SEPTEMBER 9 O ur A sking — His G iving “ The. Lord is able to give thee much more than this" (2 Chron. 25:9).
