SEPTEMBER 13 R evelation P recedes C ommission “I am the Almighty God, walk before me and be thou perfect” (Gen. 17:1). “Walk before me and be thou perfect.” These words mean literally, “ Set thyself to walk in My presence as if conscious of My inspection and solicitous o f My ap proval.” It has been pointed out that some new revelation invariably precedes the di vine call to new and difficult duty. God gives what He commands before He com mands what He wills. All His commands are conveyed to us in the form o f power, and , before; God calls Abram to be per fect in devotion, dependence, and obed ience, when so many cross-lights would distract, p e r p l e x , and fascinate the soul, he reveals to His friend His might. Such a life as that to which Abram was now called was only possible through the almightiness of God. Only by knowing God as El Shaddai is it possible to us. “ From Thee the ever-flowing spring My soul shall drink a fresh supply; While such as trust their native strength Shall melt away and droop and die.” —J. G regory M antle . SEPTEMBER 14 S ilent , E xcept to G od “ Truly my soul waiteth upon God" (Psa. 62:1). The effect o f a silent colloquy with God is so soothing! There was a time when I used greatly to wonder at these words of Luther: “ Bear and forbear, and silent be, Tell to no man thy misery; Yield not in trouble to dismay, God can deliver any day.” I wondered, because we feel the outpour ing of grief into the heart of a friend to be so sweet. A t the same time, he who talks much of his troubles to men is apt to fall into a way o f saying too little o f them to G od ; while, on the other hand, he who has often experienced the blessed alleviation which flows from silent converse with the Eternal, loses much o f his desire for the sympathy of his fellows. -^A ugustus F. Helen Keller Speaks of the Word and the World I n acknowledging the arrival of a new Braille Bible in twenty volupies, Miss Helen Keller recently wrote the American Bible Society: “ Forty years long I have loved the Word of God, and now I am happy to have it so conveniently and beautifully bound. I am pleased with everything about it—the covers, which my friends tell me suggest the Lord’s green pastures, the excellent printing on both sides o f the sheet, the lightness o f the books, the numbering of the verses, which is the best I have ever had, and the well-marked title on the back o f each volume. “ I feel the blessed pages under my hand with special thankfulness as a rod and a staff to keep firm my steps through the valley o f the shadow of depression and world calamity. Truly, the Bible . . ‘is the only way out of the dark.’ I f the wealth o f things which we have pos sessed in abundance has not knocked on our selfish hearts and opened them to the central message o f Jesus, ‘Love ye one an other,’ perhaps these days o f wide-spread suffering will be the pointed instrument that will ‘stab [our] spirit broad awake.’ ” Separation B y M. E. D odd I n my judgment, the greatest scandal of Christianity has always been and is now to be found in that large number o f pro fessed Christians who still live in the low lands of the lusts o f the flesh, in which they found pleasure prior to their profes sion o f Christ. What should be thought o f a business partnership in which one of the partners was constantly undermining and destroy ing the business by his conduct or was neglecting it by his devotion to a former partnership ? What should be thought of a profes sional partnership between doctors, law yers, or teachers, in which one party to the covenant and contract was constantly criti cizing, condemning, and destroying the business by word of mouth and by way of life? What should be thought of a domestic partnership in which the bride had sol emnly promised in the presence o f God and the assembled witnesses that she would “ forsake all others and cleave to him and him only until death do us part,” if it were discovered that she was carrying on clandestine and improper relationships with former .suitors? God and His people are partners in busi ness. They have entered into a solemn cov enant in their profession, and even more in timately than that, they are bound to gether in the holy bonds of spiritual matri mony. It was said o f Jehovah that He was married to Israel, and no greater condem nation was issued than that Israel went a-whoring •after other gods. The Lord Jesus has chosen the church as His bride, and she is pledged to Him and Him only “ until death do them part.” What then is to be said o f members of the bride of Christ who are committing spiritual adul tery on the outside? The greatest tragedy o f Christianity is that many Christians have not obeyed and are not obeying: this command to separate themselves from the world, the flesh, and the devil. Oh, that our church were a separted peo ple !—W atchman -E xaminer . .
