The Landscaper’s Guide to Modern Sales and Marketing Newsletter
JANUARY 2024
Why you? I know it sounds harsh, but you need to ask yourself questions like this in 2024 as you strive to grow your business. At Ramblin Jackson, I’m also planning on growth this year. We’ve reached a point where we’ve perfected our operations, and it’s time to shift our focus to growing and strengthening our clientele. As I review client audits to see how we can do better, I see clients wondering why they aren’t “getting results” and growing as fast as expected. Often, these business owners are located in cities already densely populated with other landscape, lawn, and tree care companies. When competition is fierce, you must start separating yourself from the crowd. Many companies love to show off how long they’ve been in the industry on their websites and use their seniority as their marketing edge. Unfortunately, that’s not going to cut it. Clients don’t care about how long you’ve been in business. What they care about is whether or not you’re reliable and what makes you different. This is where reviews can become your ticket to success. Let’s say a potential client is searching online for different lawn care services. They find one business with 20 reviews and another with over 100. It’s clear which one they’re more likely to dial. People are on Google searching for services because their current lawn care team has let them down. Your reviews can be what pulls them in to trust you. How do your reviews compare to other companies in your area? If your reviews don’t compare, then why would a customer choose you? No more beating around the bush. It’s time to take a clear look at what would make a person hire you and market that specific advantage. If you’re asking yourself, “Well, then why am I investing in marketing if that alone can’t win me clients?” In a competitive market, countless other competitors will also be investing in marketing services and have more reviews. You need to be aiming higher and highlighting whatever competitive edge you have. You Can Thrive in a Competitive Market A ROAD MAP TO STAND OUT AND EXPAND YOUR CLIENTELE
“It’s time to take a clear look at what would make a person hire you and market that specific advantage.”
As you ask yourself, “Why would someone hire my business?” you should also identify your target audience. Who is your Hell Yes Customer, and how can you attract them? When you clearly answer this question, you can understand the “why” drive behind their purchasing decision. Examine your Hell Yes Customer’s needs, preferences, shopping patterns, behaviors, and demographics to tailor your marketing specifically to them. Next, consider what your business has to offer that’s unique and would reel in this Hell Yes Customer. To identify your advantages, ask yourself: • Do you have access to resources or equipment your competitors don’t? • Does the skills, experience, or customer service your team offers differ from other businesses? • Does the location or service areas of your business make you the most convenient choice? • Do the prices or types of services you offer outshine your competition? Examining your business and answering these questions can help you realize why a customer would pick you and bring you that much closer to growing your client list in 2024. If you want to discover how to effectively market your unique edge, my team and I are always here to help you grow. Let’s make this year the best for your business yet!

RAINWATER HARVESTING HELPS KEEP OUR PLANET GREEN CASH IN ON RAIN
Rainwater harvesting has been increasing in popularity as people seek sustainable and environmentally friendly options for freshwater. Rainwater harvesting is exactly what it sounds like, collecting and storing rainwater for various uses, such as landscaping and household needs. Here are three reasons why rainwater harvesting benefits individuals and the planet. Sustainability Rainwater harvesting is celebrated for its dual-purpose approach: It conserves a precious resource while offering practical solutions to everyday needs. It helps reduce water scarcity, easing the burden on traditional water sources, and lowers energy consumption and carbon emissions. It’s a vital step in preserving our planet’s limited resources and safeguarding the environment for future generations. Cost Savings and Financial Benefits With the escalating costs of municipal water services, rainwater harvesting provides a financial incentive, promising lower utility bills and reduced expenses. It’s an investment in the environment
and your financial well-being, making it a win-win solution that contributes to sustainable living while strengthening economic stability. Community and Global Initiatives Communities and governments worldwide are promoting rainwater harvesting through incentives, subsidies, and awareness campaigns. In some regions, it has even become a legal requirement to further spur people into action and contribute to a sustainable future. Rainwater harvesting has become a collective movement toward a greener world, demonstrating the power of communities coming together for the common good. The craze for rainwater harvesting signifies a fundamental shift in how we approach and manage potable water. As the world grapples with environmental challenges, rainwater harvesting offers an eco-friendly, cost-effective, and reliable long-term solution. It is no longer just a trend but an integral part of the journey toward a greener, more sustainable future, ensuring a better world for everyone.
CRUCIAL QUESTIONS FOR YOUR 2024 SALES AND MARKETING MEETING CREATE A BLUEPRINT FOR SUCCESS
Your annual sales and marketing meeting sets you up for success, so the questions you ask in these meetings are just as crucial. The Ramblin Jackson team recently concluded our two-day annual sales and marketing meeting, where we reviewed our 2023 and planned for the year ahead. Here are a few questions we covered that you should start implementing in your annual meeting! What can you and the team look forward to? Before diving into leads, sales, and strategies, look at your calendar and plan your vacation and team retreats. You need to have time on your calendar to look forward to! As we’ve said in the past, times can be rough as a business owner, but family time and team bonding can give you the energy boost you need to keep going. For your team retreat, review your profit versus loss and see whether a retreat is viable or not. It shows your staff that team retreats aren’t necessarily a given, and when you can make it happen, you can all cherish it that much more. Our Rambler Retreats are vital to our company and bring us closer together. Make team culture an essential
part of your annual planning! Ask yourself and your team, “Do you have something in your calendar to motivate you through this year?”
How can your team increase leads and sales? Of course, you also need to get into the nitty-gritty of how you’ll be increasing your leads and sales in 2024. Will it be content creation like podcasts and social media videos or email newsletters and direct mail marketing? Make a strategic plan with your sales team to map out the coming year, your next steps, and how they work toward expanding your client list. Who is your ‘Hell Yes Customer’ in 2024? A question you need to revisit every year is, “Who is your Hell Yes Customer?” You must identify your Hell Yes Customer and targeted audience in order to create marketing that actually hits its mark. As you tailor your marketing to this demographic, be sure to assess expenses and the exact tactics you’ll be implementing. Leave no room for ambiguity on what comes next! Create those steps and make them crystal clear and how the team will follow them.

1 Why Should They Choose You? 2 Rainwater Harvesting: A Sustainable Revolution 2 Elevate Your Annual Sales Meeting With These Key Questions 3 Upcoming Events 3 Ready to Level Up Your Marketing? 4 How Elk Hunting Teaches the Power of Perseverance
FROM FROZEN FORESTS TO BUSINESS FRONTIERS WHAT ELK HUNTING TAUGHT ME ABOUT ENTREPRENEURSHIP
I look forward to my hunting trip every year, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. This year, while waiting for what seemed like forever in the freezing cold, I realized there was a lot to apply to being a business owner. My business coach, Wayne, who also hunts, gave me sage advice: hunting elk with a bow is a five-year project. I’ve bow-hunted for elk three years and haven’t harvested yet, but in my third year, I drew my bow on a bull within 20 yards. I didn’t have a clear ethical shot, so I didn’t take it — but it was exhilarating to get that close. I’m sure you can see how this would apply to business. While one person might say five years for archery hunting, a person might take five years to hunt elk with a rifle. Of course, there’s always a miraculous moment when a lucky newcomer seems to snag an elk in no time. When we create goals for ourselves, we usually plan specific deadlines and time
frames to go along with them. But the truth is results can take longer than we anticipated. Just because we announce something will be achieved by a specific time doesn’t mean it will work out just as we planned. Our incredible team member Chris Brown was able to help a client remember this despite the client feeling frustrated that he didn’t reach his desired number of leads in 12 months. Chris had to remind him that winter is a time when leads are naturally down, and there were more factors to consider that would cause a delay in his goal. As a business owner, you must be prepared for change and results to take longer.
business. Conditions were intense on this year’s second season rifle hunting trip, and elk were nowhere to be found. On day four of the trip, a hunt camp from California gave up and left. Well, it was on day five that we ended up finally seeing elk and harvesting a nice cow. Don’t make quitting an option just because your results are taking longer than expected. You never know when they’re just around the corner.
Hunting can be frustrating, but I look forward to it every year. It motivates me, and while it is a challenge, it’s still fun for me to embark on. The joy of strategizing and hunting makes the low points all worthwhile. Let’s start looking at our
You can’t give up before the magic happens, which applies to hunting and
