FROM FROZEN FORESTS TO BUSINESS FRONTIERS WHAT ELK HUNTING TAUGHT ME ABOUT ENTREPRENEURSHIP

I look forward to my hunting trip every year, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. This year, while waiting for what seemed like forever in the freezing cold, I realized there was a lot to apply to being a business owner. My business coach, Wayne, who also hunts, gave me sage advice: hunting elk with a bow is a five-year project. I’ve bow-hunted for elk three years and haven’t harvested yet, but in my third year, I drew my bow on a bull within 20 yards. I didn’t have a clear ethical shot, so I didn’t take it — but it was exhilarating to get that close. I’m sure you can see how this would apply to business. While one person might say five years for archery hunting, a person might take five years to hunt elk with a rifle. Of course, there’s always a miraculous moment when a lucky newcomer seems to snag an elk in no time. When we create goals for ourselves, we usually plan specific deadlines and time

frames to go along with them. But the truth is results can take longer than we anticipated. Just because we announce something will be achieved by a specific time doesn’t mean it will work out just as we planned. Our incredible team member Chris Brown was able to help a client remember this despite the client feeling frustrated that he didn’t reach his desired number of leads in 12 months. Chris had to remind him that winter is a time when leads are naturally down, and there were more factors to consider that would cause a delay in his goal. As a business owner, you must be prepared for change and results to take longer.

business. Conditions were intense on this year’s second season rifle hunting trip, and elk were nowhere to be found. On day four of the trip, a hunt camp from California gave up and left. Well, it was on day five that we ended up finally seeing elk and harvesting a nice cow. Don’t make quitting an option just because your results are taking longer than expected. You never know when they’re just around the corner.

Hunting can be frustrating, but I look forward to it every year. It motivates me, and while it is a challenge, it’s still fun for me to embark on. The joy of strategizing and hunting makes the low points all worthwhile. Let’s start looking at our

You can’t give up before the magic happens, which applies to hunting and

businesses this way, too!
