PEOPLE, PLACES, AND THINGS
THE UNEXPECTED MENTORS THAT SHAPE OUR SUCCESS
impossible, I’ve found that most people are more than happy to talk and share their knowledge or experiences with anyone willing to listen. You don’t even have to talk to some of them in real life. You can read their books, listen to their podcasts, or watch their YouTube videos and absorb that information without them knowing who you are. In their own ways, these people are mentors.
The first time I ever learned to do something from a book was in elementary school. My mom bought me a book about magic tricks, and many nights, I’d hole myself up in my room to read and practice
When it comes to places, putting yourself in a location that will help you reach your goals makes them mentors. For example, I want to learn from God and become closer to Him, so I spend time in church. If I wanted to write a book, I’d go to a library or somewhere quiet that’s conducive to writing. I used to be afraid of public speaking. So, 10 years ago, I forced myself to join a networking group. Every Wednesday at 7 a.m. I had to stand up in front of 40 people and give my 30 second speech on a good business referral. It was challenging at times, but paid dividends later on. The point is that the places you intentionally choose to put yourself should be conducive to your goals, not prevent them.
until the trick looked like, well, magic. I’d then take what I learned from that book and those nights in my room to the streets, and by streets, I mean for the kids in my neighborhood. I’d stand before them all and perform my tricks as they gasped, awed, and tried their best to guess the secret behind the magic.
But in my eyes, mentors can be more than just people; they can be places and things, too.
Something I learned through observation was how to cut lawns from my dad. He showed me how to start the mower, take it apart, fill the tank, and use it to mow lawns for our neighbors and start my first business.
And finally, the things we spend our time on and doing can teach us more than you’d realize. I mean, a book taught me how to do magic! “Things” in this context can be books, videos, podcasts, TV, radio, our phones, cars, lawnmowers, anything. As long as the time you spend with this item actively teaches you something, it, too, can serve as a mentor in your life. So, I advise anyone trying to learn something new, accomplish a goal, or overcome a hardship this year to look to the people, places, and things around you that you can learn from. Maybe starting a friendship with someone with the
I tell you these things not because I’m looking to restart my magic or lawn mowing career but to show that the most valuable skills we learn aren’t from school or expensive courses but from the mentors we have in our lives. You might have read that sentence and thought the term “mentor” was a bit odd or out of place there; after all, we use this term to describe people, and it was a book that taught me magic. But in my eyes, mentors can be more than just people; they can be places and things, too. For nearly all my life, I’ve picked up traits, habits, knowledge, and skills from other people, places, and things almost entirely through osmosis. By this, I mean that I’ve absorbed them by simply observing, reading, or asking questions instead of receiving a formal education like a class. And while you may think this is
same goals as you, picking up a book, or going to a place that inspires you will teach you something more valuable than any class or course.

ELLA’S ROLLERBLADE ADVENTURE TAKES THE CUL-DE-SAC BY STORM! CHICKS DIG IT
Hi newsletter friends, it’s Ella!
A few months ago, one of my friends had her birthday party at the roller rink. I already had some old skates, but I tried rollerblading for the first time at my friend’s party and had so much fun! The only difference between a skate and a blade is roller skates have four wheels that are spaced out like a square, but in-line skates have wheels that are all in a straight line. That means you have to
balance very carefully to stay upright!
I had so much fun at my friend’s party that when my birthday came around in September, I already knew exactly what I was going to ask my mom and dad to get me: in-line skates! My mom asked me what color blades I wanted, and I chose a neon green to match my helmet. When I unboxed my skates on my birthday, I immediately put them on and started skating all around our street — and I haven’t stopped since! Now, I’ve gotten so good that I hardly ever fall, and I can skate so fast that Juliet has to chase me on her scooter. Sometimes, I skate a little slower just so she can ride her scooter in front of me and feel like she’s going super fast, too. The best part is my rollerblading has caught on with my family. Just a few weekends ago, my dad took me to the roller rink he used to skate in as a kid, and we were able to all skate together, which was so much fun! Since I had been practicing since my birthday, I was zooming around the whole rink and passing people so fast they looked all blurry. My plan is to keep rollerblading for as long as I have fun doing it, and I’ll tell you now, I’m having A TON of fun out in the cul-de-sac every day. Who knows, maybe the next time you hear from me, I’ll be the fastest rollerblader in town! —Ella Burns
