CEOs of the Industry (Volume 1)

INFLUENTIAL INSIGHTS HOW I STARTED IN PORK

OUR GROWTH PHILOSOPHY Although automation and artificial intelligence will continue to infiltrate the industry, people are its future. Their skill and judgment are needed to continue helping feed the world, and all else are tools to make their jobs easier. “I don’t know where (into), but I do know Triumph’s going to grow.” FACING NEW DEVELOPMENTS He’s not a fan of consolidation in the industry. Competition is what has made the U.S. a world leader in pork exports and kept consistent pressure on ever- improving food quality, safety and price. He’s a fan of Triumph’s hometown and of supporting it through local partnerships and career opportunities.

Agriculture was not his first career. While working as an accountant in the 2000s, he was contacted to meet with those behind a startup called Triumph Foods, where he was hired in 2006 for business strategy and integration. In 2022, Triumph named him President/CEO. HOW I SEE LEADERSHIP Two of Matt’s mentors were Triumph cofounders Myrl Mortenson and Bob Christensen — each time he talks with Myrl, he feels a little smarter; and Bob was always accessible. He learned solid leaders make an effort to solicit and act on good ideas from anyone in the company, and to build people up. INDUSTRY TRENDS OF NOTE Matt couldn’t have foreseen how popular bacon would be, so there’s always opportunity in marketing cuts of meat — a potential U.S. up-and-comer he predicts is tonkatsu. He also sees continuing advancements in sustainability, or producing more pork using fewer natural resources. WATCH CEOS OF THE INDUSTRY
